My terrier has food allergies. I'm currently feeding him Hills perscription diet z/d ultra. The cost is $24 for an 8lb bag. I was wondering if there is another food that I can feed him that is cheaper. Not only is it expensive but its hard to find. Please help.

My dogs had food allergies, until I started feeding them Canidae All Life Stages. Problem solved! It's made for all stages of a dogs life from puppies to adults. It's all natural, human grade, has No Corn, Wheat, Soy, Grain Fractions, Fillers, By Products, Preservatives, or Dyes in it! It is also very inexpensive for such a high quality food. You can buy a small bag, which will cost you under $10, and see if he likes it. You can't find it in a lot of places, but if you go to this site:
http://www.canidae.com/dogs/all_life_stages/dry.html
Then go to this link:
http://www.canidae.com/company/storelocator.html
Type in the city you live in, and it will bring up a list of all of the stores in your area that carry it!
Here are some customer testimonials from people feeding their dogs Canidae:

Ever since I started feeding my dogs Canidae All Life Stages, they have never been sick, or had any type of allergies or skin problems. I would highly recommend this food to anyone.

I know exactly what you are going through. I have a 55 lb APBT, plus three other dogs, that has food allergies to some meat products. I have been feeding her Eukanuba F/P (fish and potato) at $60.00 for a 30 lb bag. This was no problem while I was working but is a problem now that I am retired. So I decided to experiment and try other food. I bought a small bag of a lamb and rice food and lucked out on the first try. She has been eating it for two months with no problems. Start trying other types of food till you find one he can tolerate. Buy the smallest bag you can find in case you have to through it away.

He is probally allergic to the science diet, I am sorry it is just such a bad food. My dogs both have food allergies and after much cost from testing and trial and error my dogs are allergic to the wheat and grains in the food. Many many dogs have grain allergies, dogs are carnivores and have issues with the wheats and corns ( not all but many do). My dogs are on Wellness Core it is very expensive but you get what you pay for. Wellness Core is 100& Grain Free. 5 different USDA grade meats, NO by products No prerservatives. But both my allergy dogs NO longer have allergies as long as they get No wheat or grain products. For the Wellness Core I pay $48.00 for 26 lbs but at least my dogs are healthy and no more allergies and they are getting the best.

I've had my allergic dog on California Natural for quite awhile now and have had good results with it.. Just remember that about every 6 months you need to switch the protein source.. SO, if you're feeding the chicken variety, switch to the lamb.. They have very limited ingredients so there's not much in there for your dog to be allergic too.. It's not very pricey either.. I buy the 18lb bag for about $17 here..
Here's an example..

As you can see, not many different ingredients..
Here's a store locater to find out where it's sold near you..

My veterinarian used to sell Hill's Science Diet, but discontinued when he found their ingredients are not of the quality they claim to be. He now sells Royal Canin, which my sister's allergic pit bull eats. Her dog showed a real improvement when she switched from the Science Diet allergy food to the Royal Canin allergy food; she is not on any medication now.

I have an allergic dog too and feed California Natural which is formulated for allergic dogs. It is made by the same company that makes Innova. It is a high quality food and I pay $36 for a 36 lb. bag. My friend uses it too, for her allergic dog. We are both having good results.

Natural Balance makes 4 allergy formulas: Salmon, Venison, Duck, and Vegitarian. Wellness makes a Whitefish and sweet potato, and Pinnacle makes Trout and Duck formula. IPinnacle would be my recommendation. Waaaaay better than the SD crap, and cheaper too.

What is the dog allergic to?

There are a some holistic foods for dogs with allergies that have minimal ingredients (less ingredients means less chance the dog will be allergic to something in it).

Here are a couple of them:
* California Natural - http://www.californianaturalpet.com/default.asp
* Wellness Simple - http://www.omhpet.com/wellness/dog_wellness_simple_food_solutions_index.html

You'll still want to make sure you read the ingredients so you know not to use the food if your dog is allergic to something in it.

Hills is overpriced crap. Just about anything is better. Ideally, go with a good, Raw Diet. If you can;t go raw, then go with something by Innova. Don;t give him anything with Corn or wheat gluten. And the less grain the better.
