A computer evidence examiner checks his computer, firewall logs at the hacked location, ISP records to determine where the content came from. This process can happen very quickly or take some time depending on what is needed to recover the information.

The police normally take a report of the crime and refer to the DA's office for investigation. The DA will bring in a computer forensics investigator (or use one from staff if they have one).

The DA would prosecute unless the feds take interest.
