Under the United States Code the maximum penalty for killing a police animal is 10 years. See 18 USC 1368.

Under New Jersey Statutes Annotated the maximum penalty for killing a police animal is 5 years. See NJSA
2C: 29-3.1.

I think most states are relatively the same, so no killing a police animal does not carry the same penalty as killing a law enforcement officer, which can be punishable up to death.

Yes. This happened in St. Paul, MN in 1994. I can't remember the details, but some guy started shooting cops and shot one of the police dogs. He was charged with something specific to killing a police dog (not just animal cruelty or something like), but I can't remember what the exact charge was.

I would just assume so on the horse but have heard of cases with a police dog where they were charged,

A dog is not a cop. A dog is property, a cop is a human being.

Some states may have laws that punish killing a police dog (or any living pet that does not belong to the killer), but they are not the same as killing a cop.

I do believe they tried that here in NYS and it made a big splash in the news ..... but those charges were not up held by the Grand Jury.

I really don't know! But I believe they SHOULD. After all, the animal is doing the work of a cop, right?
