Dear All
Hindu Brothers Venerate Cows as said, but the word "Venerate" has a Synonym "Worship" too. The Cow is called Gayo' Mata" Mother Cow. They worship it, some drink the Urine of it or sprinkle the urine on their person being holy to them.
I was a child and we had a Hindu Temple in the street. The Brahmin Priest of that temple used to pass by us, while we were playing taking care not to touch us. If at all if he happened to touch any one of we Muslim Children, he used to go back to again take a bath before proceeding to Temple. But we used to ponder when the same Brahmin Priest used to sprinkle the Urine of the cow, if she is urinating at that time of his passing.
This is my observation in India. They venerate or worship the cow as long as it gives Milk. Once it stops giving Milk and gets old, they are neglected and even abandoned mostly by their owners.
Majority of such abandoned cows are roaming on the roads and streets. They go and put their mouth into the food bins at food stores, which are accessible being adjacent to the roads. Other eats garbage at bins. These abandoned cows rest in the middle of the roads obstructing the traffic, but no one is daring enough to beat them and send them aside not even the Traffic Police.
Some of the Hindus discreetly sell it to a Muslim Butcher, who in turn discreetly slaughters it, as forbidden by law in many states not to slaughter a cow, being sacred to Hindus and sentimental to them. If at all if that Muslim Butcher is caught by Police, he shall go to Jail, while the Hindu who sold the cow to him, shall not be questioned.
There are few Swamijis, Hindu Religious leaders who run Gayoshala means a Shelter for such abandoned cows and they feed them all their life.
Few Years back, I have witnessed in the city where I lived, that a Shop Keeper who too was a Hindu by faith had hit the cow with a cane, which ate from his shop bin. The owner of the cow later beat the shop owner and he died, this incident was reported by News Papers.
There are instances where there are Riots between Hindus and Muslims because some Muslim had slaughtered a cow. While they do not like to kill Holy Cows, they will not mind killing Muslim men, women and children, who might not even be involved in that crime.
It will be interesting to note that the Great Mogul King Akbar the Great had banned slaughtering of cow under his rule and he also banned “SATI” burning the widow alive along with her husband after his death as it was the custom of Hindus, which is even practiced today at remote places discreetly and reported by News Papers.
Even though I am a Muslim, I personally do not like to eat Beef. I had written an article published in a Local Weekly News Paper. It was after a Bloody Riot in a place where a Muslim had slaughtered a cow. I advised the Muslim Butchers Community not to slaughter cows as well as Bulls and hold it on for few months to see, what our Hindu Brothers will do for thousands of such Cows and bulls if not slaughtered and eaten by Muslims and Christians in India. There are few Hindu communities too who eat beef.
Recently an Indian News Paper published a story, where these stray abandoned cows have ruined the Hindu Farmer’s vegetation and they were crying over their losses and demanding compensation from their owners or Government..
May God Almighty Guide All of Us to live peacefully in this world, Amen

The Egyptains worshiped cows ... & God ordered Moses & Aarron to eat cows to freak out the Egyptains. I suspect that part of the Indian tradition in honoring cows comes from Egypt.

hindus do not worship cows. cows are considered sacred and holy, but not a goddess.
cows are sacred because krishna was a cowherd, and krisha IS considered a god.
and they do NOT eat hamburgers. most hindus are vegetarians, and the ones that do eat meat do NOT eat beef. they do eat chicken and fish, and they do eat buffalo meat, which they turn into burgers. but it's never beef.
muslims in india do eat beef, and so do christians. jains are fully vegetarian, and most sikhs are too.

I always wondered why the poor people in India who are starving, don't slaughter the holy cow and chow down on some steak and burgers.

Indians don't worship cows, they venerate them.
Once you get to ninth grade, ask your teacher what "venerate" means.
