To clarify.. When I get my dog's attention, he immediately looks up at my eyes.. Or when I ask him a question ("Do you wanna go outside?") he immediately looks into my eyes.. I guess I'm just curious how they know to look there, which may also be the same question of why babies know to look at your eyes without being told. I'm pretty positive that it has nothing to do with my dog wanting to fight me.

As the other two posters said, looking into a dog's eyes is considered a "challenge to fight". My dog's play a "staring game" right before they wrestle with each other. If the dog returns your gaze, it is challenging you back, if it looks away, it is submitting.

Making eye contact with a dog is an aggressive act. It is not a good idea to look a strange dog in the eyes. A dog who knows you will do it because you are partners and if he returns your look,...he considers you an equal.

A dog will look at you and consider you his leader.
A cat will look at you and consider you inferior
A pig will look at and consider you his equal.

Actually dogs think of it as a threat when you or another dog look into their eyes, so they won't look into your eyes unless they are trying to be dominant.
