Well, you would first have to define religion-NOUN: 1a. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe. b. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.
Then apply the principals of Atheism to that definiton-NOUN: One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods.

So I would say: no.

It IS however, a belief system. It has set principals, values and rewards and benifits along with punishments. The only power athiests believe in is themselves. Since "themselves" are mortal, so is athiesm. Let them believe how they believe, they wouldn't be athiest if they were going to listen.

Some definitions of "Religion" from the Oxford English Dictionary:

"Action or conduct indicating a belief in, reverence for, and desire to please, a divine ruling power; the exercise or practice of rites or observances implying this."

"A particular system of faith and worship."

"Recognition on the part of man of some higher unseen power as having control of his destiny, and as being entitled to obedience, reverence, and worship; the general mental and moral attitude resulting from this belief, with reference to its effect upon the individual or the community; personal or general acceptance of this feeling as a standard of spiritual and practical life. "

"Devotion to some principle; strict fidelity or faithfulness; conscientiousness; pious affection or attachment."

Now, it is just possible that you could define Atheism as a religion from that last definition, if you were willing to stretch a point, and ignore the fact that atheism does not require fidelity (faithfullness) or piety ("mercy, pity, devotion, godliness, obedience").

But I'd say No.
Religion requires a supernatural deity to worship, or to whom you pray. Atheism (lit. "no god") obviously has none of that.

Religions make a change on the outside not the inside (like Christianity) so yes i would say it is similar

Yes.

A religion is a social institution that includes a set of common beliefs and practices generally held by a group of people

Atheists share the common belief that there is no God. So Atheism is the religion of no God. Just because they don't celebrate it doesn't mean they are not in a religion.

Not by me. But some people say so. Whatever.

Grandfather Raven: Thank you for bringing up the tragic epidemic of crack non-smokers. I've been addicted to not smoking crack for almost 40 years. It feels good to finally admit that.
