The other day I mentioned that someone I went to school with was a S L U T; and I offended my mother-in-law by my use of the word. What is a more polite way to describe a woman who sleeps around with men and has no respect for them?

See, my parents don't have a problem with bad words; but my in-laws are more conservative and sometimes when I'm talking to them I forget that I'm not talking to my parents.

monicanena, actually it wasn't based in rumor. She lived down the hall from me when I was in college and I saw her bring men into her bedroom and I heard them. She also boasted of all her "conquests."

In the "old days," the term "know" or "to know" was used in the "Biblical sense" as a polite reference to sex. As in, "Adam knew Eve, and she bore a son." So, if someone wanted to refer to someone in a sexual matter, the term "know/knew" would come into play....
"Do you remember Dora? She was the gal from the city... and, well... as far as men goes, she 'knew' a lot of them, in the Biblical sense!"
I think that might be the best alternative ... especially in light of the lesson in synonyms you've gotten from other answerers!
Have a polite day.

no there is really not a polite word for that. the male equivalent is playboy, but no one says 'playgirl'; unfortunately, most everyone thinks that if a woman does that then she is indeed a S L U T (a word i would never in a million years say around my parents by the way!), so you just have to describe it, there's no way to say it nicely. i don't know, loose? friendly? hehe.

There is no word - it's bad manners to talk about another person's sex life, period.
(Especially when it's based on rumor - I highly doubt you were there to witness her having sex with all those men.)

I think promiscuous would be the best word to describe her.
Hussy might still be offensive to your mother in law.

Harlot, waife, hussy, disgusting and the list goes on and degenerates too. There's no real way to be polite about it actually. I suggest reserving comment instead.

You could just say she is someone with very low self esteem that needs lots of attention from the boys.

There is no polite word. Nor is it appropriate to discuss someone else's personal life. It's gossip and there's no polite way to gossip.
