I can't afford to take her to the vet due to recently paying$700 to have one of her toes removed because of a non cancerous tumor. I have been removing the discharge every couple of days or so, but am afraid I may make it worse. I can't take her to the vet until after the holidays so any ideas as to what it may be and what I can do to help her at home would be very helpful.FYI she is a 9 year old golden retiever and I noticed the problem a few weeks ago.
thanx for any ideas

I sold my car to take care of my son and it is the only vet in walking distance. So please any ideas as to what I can do at home. It sucks being poor what can I say.

I know it's hard, but isn't there a way where your local vet can give your free care or discounted care? or have a payment plan set up???
Call around. Ask your vet, they will most likely help you, or recommend someone who can, like your local ASPCA.

She is not telling you but she is in EXTREME PAIN. That is an ear infection. You can clean her eats with some cleaner from the Vet and she need some medication for the infections It could be bacterial or fungal>...only the vet can tell you which and what is the best medicine. Call you vet and surely he will treat the dog and let you pay a little later, especially since you just paid him $700. He loves your dog as much as you do. But she is suffering and she can lose her hearing if this goes on a long time. GET HER SOME HELP.

Ear mites can sometimes be treated with over-the-counter meds you can buy at petshops. I would reccommend trying one, but I'm not 100% sure it's mites. Does she have brown crusty stuff as well?
If it's an ear infection, you'd have to take her to the vet. Try feeding her some yougurt, it can help, depending on the type of infection (just make sure it's plain vanilla--certain other things like chocolate are toxic to dogs). Or put some white vinegar in her ears. Keep trying your best to keep them clean and drained, because letting the fluid sit in there won't help an infection at all.
However, since I'm not sure, she really needs to see a vet to have this treated.
EDIT: Since you don't have the money to take your dog in for treatment, maybe you could phone your vet and see if he can reccommend anything without you actually having to pay for an office visit. You can also try the yogurt, drops, vinegar and several other people have reccommended things that might help as well. But please do something for your dog, and if it doesn't get better soon, please take her to a vet. Maybe you know someone who can loan you money to pay for the visit? Perhaps your vet will let you make smaller monthly payments? Some humane societies offer reduced cost veterinary services as well (though most don't-some do). That's worth looking into!
Best wishes!

Sounds like an ear infection. Take your dog to the vet. If you can't afford that then you'll have to keep an eye on the infection. Home remedies include the following:
Wipe your dogs ears out with a clean tissue or towel. Most pet stores will have a mild cleaner for the ear but I suggest using a small amount of peroxide once a day. If the problem persists you will have to take your dog to the vet.

Brown discharge and odor = infection and your dog needs a vet to have her ears cleaned and get antibiotics. I have goldens and infections occur occasionally. This is not a hugely expensive vet visit but it is an absolutely necessary one and it can't wait till after the holidays.
Humane societies do not provide veterinary treatment for illnesses and injuries. They do vaccinations, spays and neuters and sometimes microchips. They do not compete with local vets for treatment.

Classic yeast infection, hence the odor. You need to get ehr to the vet! For now though, clean her ears with an ALCHOHOL FREE cleaner. (I use Ark Naturals Ears all right) And try a drop of white vinegar in each ear to neutralize the yeast. But get thet girl to the vet asap!

If you have a dog you should be able to take care of it as if it were your own child.......If you can not afford to keep your dog give it up, because what you are doing can be considered inhumane.
I will caution you, anything you give to your dog with out a veternarian's consultation, may cause your dog to go deaf, have an allergic severe reaction (that 1800petmeds is not responsible for), and even DIE.
You purchase meds on line at YOUR OWN RISK.
For sure get the cleansing solution,,....As for the antibiotic, follow the girl above me...bullmast advice.
you can clean your dog's ears......maybe go online to
http://www.1800petmeds.com/pdetail.asp?SK=10660
DO NOT PURCHASE THE ANTIBIOTICS.....YOU WILL BE TAKING A HUGE RISK.
THERE ARE SO MANY LAW SUITS.....PLEASE JUST FOLLOW THE ADVICE ABOVE ME..FROM THAT GIRL ABOVE ME.

she likely has an infection - possibly yeast. only vet will know for sure. regular cleaning with something like Epi-otic may help, but if there is an infection, it will continue and could get worse without treatment.

she may have a skin fungus or infection that's what my dog has in her feet. if you go to a reliable vet then they should have some ointment or something to help.

Well, you need to somehow afford it...Sounds like either an infection or ear mites and if left untreated, she could lose her hearing.
