he hates it, he hisses for about 10 minutes after applying it, then runs from me for a week. do you think it hurts him, or makes him sick? (he has no outward symptoms of being sick). if so, what else can i do to get rid of fleas?

I don't think it makes him sick, I think he just hates having it applied! Also the stuff does not sting, unless he's got wounds on him.
I would slowly introduce him to having the stuff put on. Spend as much time as possible stroking your cat until he's nice and relaxed (does he like being stroked?). Spend plenty of time stroking his neck and tugging gently at the fur where you put the Advantage, so he gets used to being poked around there. One day when he needs his Advantage, get him nice and relaxed like this and then subtly sneak the Advantage on to him!

Some animals rarely have a bad, short-term burning reaction to spot-on flea treatments, and according to our shelter vet, it seems to happen more with Advantage than Frontline Plus. I also know someone who has this problem with a dog and cannot use Advantage but Frontline is OK. So I'd try switching to Frontline Plus and if that doesn't work, talk to your vet about alternative treatments.
My cat is mildly annoyed at me when I apply Advantage but doesn't stay annoyed long. The reaction yours has is so severe, I'd suspect that its hurting him.

i would maybe look into using one of the other products. I use revolution and the cats don't seem to like the wet feeling but manage to get over it pretty quickly.
The problem of fleas is awful if you get them so it is worth it to avoid them
