It depends on the state you live in, but in most, yes - in order to have a car registered at all you need insurance. Some companies offer what is called "storage insurance" - this satisfies the legal requirements until your car is ready to be put on the road.
However, since every state has different laws, you need to do some checking. A good insurance agent would help you with that.

Once again UCANTCME is wrong with the "canned answer" of contacting the DMV. They won't know anything about this issue. The thing to consider is where the car is stored and it's worth. If it is a cheap beater..no loss if something happens. If it is a nice car, keep coverage on it. If it is still financed, you do have a requirement to keep coverage on it at all times. Call your insurance carrier and ask them if they have a special policy for this circumstance. Many do.

Where I lived in Florida (Marion County) all vehicles on your property had to be tagged and insured. Otherwise they were considered junk cars and you could be ticketed. There is also the issue of damage caused to the vehicle while sitting, such as fire, theft or hail.

If it's registered/tagged, then yes. If you are not driving it, turn in the plate and then you don't have to buy insurance.

DEPENDS ON THE STATE THAT YOU LIVE IN BECAUSE SOME STATES DO REQUIRE YOU TO HAVE INSURANCE ON ALL VEHICLE IF THEY ARE DRIVEN OR NOT.
ITS BEST IF YOU CONTACT YOUR LOCAL (DMV) DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES OFFICE, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO ANSWER ANY AND ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS AND AT THE SAME TIME YOU WILL BE GETTING THE CORRECT ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION.
