Repetition. When he gets it right-treat

try using something tastier than a ball! My husky could care less about catching toys, but if I toss him a treat he will snatch it out of mid-air. Try this with your dog and when he catches it then praise the dickens outta him. Soon he will associate the praise with the catch and he will hopefully start to catch other things too. Good luck!

PS. My husky still won't play with toys, ha! so this is only a theory!

Start with a soft ball so it doesn't hurt his mouth and teeth. Start up close and repeat and repeat, back off and repeat and repeat. Our old dog would catch it with his paws, but not the mouth. Looked like a little football player.
Our current heeler, catches with his mouth and will play until you drop or the sun goes down. We throw the ball on top of the house and he tries to figure out where it is coming down and catchs it.

Perhaps he doesn`t want to do it. A dog will retrieve a ball if he is rewarded every time, after a while if he gets really excited thinking of his chocolate drop he will catch it in mid air, but If he doesn`t want to do it you wont get him to do it. I had a dog that wouldn`t chase a ball if you paid him. He looked at me as if to say you threw it you retrieve it.

You can start off by having him right in front of you and tossing him a small, soft, stuffed toy. When he catches it, praise him immediately. Get him to drop it and then give him a tiny treat.

Repeat this until he understands the sequence of events. He catches the toy and drops it in front of you and he gets a treat.
then soon do this out side and throw it farther then use a ball

Repeat the process over and over..
If it does not work try throwing bits of meat/treats into the air and he may then respond to that.
Keep doing this until he is willing to catch the ball/stick or whatever.

If he doesn't well then hes just plain lazy

try tossing him bite size treats and see if he will catch them. when he does, praise and give a "jack-pot" treat. keep doing this until he is catching the food reliably. then switch to a soft toy and still reward for catching. then graduate to tennis ball (or whatever ball). keep praising and treating for awhile until it's clear he is enjoying the ball as it's own reward. have fun!
