i understand the obvious religious ties to the prophet, but why so intolerant? is it a fear of their god that creates this reaction? is it something written within the koran? i am genuinely curious.

ps: i'm not bashing, so don't give me that b.s. I know that every religion has it's own fanatics. but i have never seen other religions or actual countries react so dramatically intolerant to something that may be viewed as blasphemy to one person (but petty to another))

i guess i should have clarified the question. i am not talking about this instance. this is one of many recent examples of intolerance. the dutch filmaker that was murdered in his own country becasue of a (blasphemous) film he was working on. the rage over the prophet muhammed cartoons. and as far as "christ piss" sculpture, yea maybe it's offensive, but i'm sure the artist isn't rec'g death threats becasue of it. the question is about TOLERANCE and INTOLERANCE.

I honestly believe, as a result of reading the koran, that islam is based upon intolerance.

If you will take the time to READ the koran, you'll see that there's just ONE verse dealing with "love"...and it's about Moses.

Then, 1 out of every 55 verses deals with violence and waging war on Jews and Christians.

This is NOT opinion...it's FACT. Read the koran for an understanding of the true nature of islam.

Then, you will understand why even the name "muhammed" meets with such intolerance and violence.

I'd post a website link for reference, but "they" are stalking my answers (reporting basically any time that I answer with my opinion) and adding to my collection of hate and death-threat e-mails. Interesting behavior for a "religion of peace", huh?

Muslims would deny that they worship Muhammad. However, looking-in from the outside it appears that they do in fact worship their prophet. They even go so far as to bow down to the birth place of Muhammad. Muhammad was born in Mecca in 570. Mecca, the birthplace of Muhammad, is even regarded as holy ground and off limits for non-muslims.

But that is only appearance! Muslim do not claim to worship Muhammad and in fact deny this. Yet, bowing down to the birth place of a prophet appears to everyone else to be worshiping that prophet.

Yet I know Muslims would take offense if you say they worship Muhammad. It just appears like they do to us looking in.

Such intense devotion to a prophet very confusing for non-Muslims. So good question I wish I had a better answer.

For example, how do you commit blasphemy against a prophet? A prophet is not God and yet speaking against Muhammad is regarded as blasphemy? Very confusing.

Thus us outsiders are all confused about this. I cannot find any concise explanation or how Muslims balance this with their beliefs in one God. Clearly this Islamic prophet requires respect that most other religions would regard as worship.

Hopefully, there is a Muslim out there that can clarify this better for us. I really do not understand, even reading the articles below I'm still confused regarding this question.

Here are a couple of articles that might help with this question. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammed

Remember different cultures have different laws, remember years ago when that kid got caned in some Asian country for spitting on the sidewalk?
