He's still a very young pup, so age is not a factor.

Then why is it ok to crop other dog's ears?

Thanks peeps. Sincerely hope the next time someone asks about getting their Dobe's/Pits/Whatever's ears sliced off you give them this same reaction. I know you won't though. Sad.

Probably the same reason why your pediatrician wouldn't circumcise your daughter.

It's unethical and it's just not done.

Actually you are wrong, very wrong if you think someone saying getting a Boxer or Dobermans ears cropped wouldn't get the same reaction!
This BARBARIC practise is banned in most Countries and certainly in the UK and I disagree with anyone who says it is necessary whatever breed they own. I don't even agree with Tail cropping (lots of hunting dogs have tails) or cat de-clawing or even whisker clipping!
Animals should stay the way they are at birth, not mutilated because some person thinks it looks better or it stops them scratching furniture!
If you want a dog with ears that stand up get a breeds that do!
Personally I've had Shepherds with floppy ears and I've loved them as much as the ones whose ears stand erect!

A retriever is a water dog. The floppiness of their ears is to help protect the inner ear from water, and keep it warm while hunting. The reason some breed's ears are cropped is because the ears are a floppy, easily grabbed piece of skin. In pit bulls, dobermans, etc the ears are cropped to minimize the amount of skin that's ripped from them when they fight.

If you are dissatisfied with the size of your dog's ears, wait till it grows up a little. The relative size will diminish as the dog grows. If you wanted your dog's ears to stand perkily at attention, it's not a good reason to have them cropped. There really is no reason to crop your dog's ears.

Go ahead and post this question in 2 weeks and I guarantee you that every answer is exactly the same.

1. Your vet is right.
2. You are cruel to even think about this completely unnecessary procedure.

Cropping a dog's ears is inhumane and animal cruelty. Your vet is right to refuse the surgery on your dog.
For what it's worth, a retriever is not a breed that has its ears cropped, so that is probably the reason.
I hope he refuses to crop any breeds ears from now on as well, that is a very bold and awesome thing to do.
I don't care what breed it is, NO dog should have its ears mutilated only to conform to OUR flawed human "cosmetic" standards!!!!

Why in the name of God would you want to crop his ears! This is a barbaric thing and has been outlawed in Britain as well as cropping tails. God gave them ears and tails for a reason and humans have absolutely NO RIGHT whatsoever to inflict such cruelty a on any animal. Maybe you should have YOUR ears cropped and see how YOU like it! Thank goodness your vet refused, at least he cared about the dog which is obviously more than can be said for you!!!

Because your vet has a heart! Ear cropping and tail docking are for cosmetic purposes only. They are unnecessary, unethical, cruel, inhumane, barbaric, and extremely painful for the dog. A lot of vets out there, do not do that procedure for those reasons. Here is a video of an ear cropping!

Please, for the sake of your dog, do not do this to him. I'm sure he is a beautiful dog, whether his ears are cropped or not. Retrievers, do have their ears cropped anyway, so why would you want to put your puppy through that kind of torture. It's not fair and it's not right!

Why would he? Retrievers don't have their ears cropped. It's not part of their breed standard. Plus not a whole lot of vets are cropping ears anymore, that probably has something to do with it as well.. A retriever with cropped ears would look absolutely ridiculous.

It is not OK to crop a dogs ears regardless of the breed.
Good for your vet.

Reasons:
1. Retrievers don't get their ears cropped.
2. Cropping is unnecessary even for the breeds that do commonly get their ears cropped.
3. Any later than new-born is rightly considered cruel.
4. Your vet is wise and is doing her job well.

Please listen to your vet and don't do this to your dog!

Why do you want to crop your retriever's ears? Your vet won't do it because it is not medically necessary (no ear cropping ever is) and it is inhumane. Some breeders of traditionally cropped dogs don't do it anymore. There is absolutely no reason to crop your dog's ears and I'm glad your vet has some sense.
