Look at where it is being held. I would normally wear a cocktail dress but if it is being held at a formal location, I would step it up to a long dress.

I think your best bet would be to contact the bride (or possibly mother of the bride or mother of the groom) and ask her if she would prefer guests to wear formal attire or if a cocktail dress would be more suitable. If you take a guess and you are wrong, you risk sticking out like a sore thumb, or worse.. offending the couple by wearing something totally inappropriate!

Note: Usually, if it is a blacktie (formal) affair, it would be noted on the invitation or the reception card.

I'd say a cocktail dress in a deep jewl tone. There will be so many "party" dresses to choose from for the holidays. Wear something you feel good in and have fun. No one should judge you for what you wear as long as you don't look better than the bride :)

what you were will depend on where the reception is held
but for a formal party on new years I'd say either will do
if its cold( and it will be) were a long coat

I think either would be fine.. pick whichever you prefer to wear as long as you don't mean "miniskirt" when you say short..

A "little black dress" would be perfect.
