I am following an associate in science degree in criminal justice technology but I don't know what is the best bachelor degree that I can take, I have many courses of chemistry and biology, and I would like to work in and off the scene and the crime lab, if I want to work in both places, what would be the best field for me? I heard that a forensic scientist is a better remunerated job but I wouldn't like to work only in a laboratory and I want to participate in the investigations fully.

thank you

I am a detective with a sheriff's department. My job at a crime scene is to examine the scene and contact the crime techs to come in and process the scene. They will photograph, diagram, collect evidence such as fingerprints, gun shot residue, DNA, blood etc. They will take the evidence to the crime lab where it will be processed either by them or a forensic scientist (one who works solely in a lab) depending on the evidence collected. A report will be generated and sent back to me, the detective in charge of the case. I will combine that report with other information collected from witnesses to help find the responsible person. As the detective in charge, I will interview witnesses and suspects. When there is enough evidence to charge a suspect, I will bring the case to a prosecutor and they will write a complaint and warrant. I will swear to the warrant and arrest the suspect. The detective is responsible for working with the prosecutor until the suspect is tried. The crime scene techs will be called as witnesses to testify in the trial. The crime lab is not utilized in all cases, just those that have evidence that needs to be processed. On the other hand, the detective will be in charge of every case that is investigated. It sounds to me like you would be more interested in being a crime scene technoligist.

Investigators examine and preserve evidence at a crime scene. I have seen forensic investigators who look for this type of evidence on the scene and send it to the lab. If you know what area of the country you want to work in, check with their police department.
