There is ample evidence from long-term statistics on the importance of religion in people's lives. Since 1965 those who say religion is very important declined from 70% in to 56%; those who say it's unimportant rose concomitantly.

For the same reason that Charlie Darwin became the first evolutionist - misunderstanding and misapplication of sound doctrine and thus, the lack of faith.

Without a proper understanding of spiritual guidance one is lead to jerry-rigging. The same would apply for when no instruction manual is provided for the assembly of a complex object. In the case of non belief though, they have jerry-rigged the concept of life.

It's a one-way street for the most part. When you're thinking rationally, the thought of becoming irrational isn't terribly appealing.

If you don't start with the premise that a particular religion represents the truth, you're unlikely to ever conclude that it is.

Because we recognize the inherent harm in deluding ones self. For one trapped in a delusion, it's impossible to see they are trapped.

Because most Atheists were at one time religious, or brought up by religious people and actively chose to reject it as untrue. Where as most religious people, inherited their belief system and have a reason to seek other answers.
