This is so cool! I just saw a commercial for Progressive Insurance, and they now offer Pet Injury Insurance for accidents. It covers vet bills, etc. if you dog is injured in an accident. hat do you guys think? Has anyone else heard about this, and if so do you know more details? (I'm really interested but I don't want to call and be harrassed about buying a policy.)

Notablacksaint: That's kinda what I was wondering. the dog in the commercial IS in a seatbelt. My huskies HATE being belted down, so it might be a waste of my time. Thanks 4 the info!

I just talked to them. They said if you have a full coverage policy with collision, you can add the Pet Injury feature at no additional chargs. The pet does not have to be restrained, and it will cover up to $500 in vet bills if your pet is injured in an accident. Kind of sounds worth it....

A friend called because that is his insurance company, and there seemed to be a LOT of confusion as to the fine print. She agent said the dog MUST be in a seat-belt restraint. That a secured crate did not count as a restraint. It had to be one of the devices that used the seat belt. He is trying to confirm that because there seemed to be a lot of banter with the agent and a few other agents while he was on the phone. Didn't seem to be much "soild" knowledge there.
We are talking about the car insurance policy that covers the dog if it is in the car when the accident occurs, right??
It seems some others are talking about your standard pet insurance.
Yeah, I will be kind of dismayed if they will not accept a crate (secured of course) instesd of a seat blet. Mine are too big for the seat belt, and one would have it chewed to shreds inseconds. I would think a crate would be safer!

Overall I think its a good idea, especially if you have a pet who seems prone to illness or injury. :-) Vet bills can be expensive, and having some insurance to help pay for treatments could help save lives--no more "having to put poor Fluffy down cause she got hit by a car and we can't pay for surgery". So I say it's a great idea, and though some people would benefit more than others, I think it's something we should all start looking into.

Honestly I would look into..more so if your from Canada...the vet bills here are way to high...my friends take the cats across the boarder to the vets there because it isn't as expensive...I myself have considered geting the insurance I just need more information on it..I think it's about time something like that is offered and I would be more then willing to pay for something like that monthly then pay for high vet bills...but be sure to check for coverage because you never know what those grey areas are!

I actually just heard about this the other day as well. Sorry, but I know nothing more about it than you do! It's a great idea, although I already have pet insurance for my dogs so it would cover accidents like that anyways.

I saw that too and have been thinking of checking it out but unfortunately don't know enough yet. Maybe try the progressive website, I'm sure it is out there somewhere without having to be hasseled by a sales person. Also you might check with your vet and see if they have any experience with claims on these policies.

This is not something that's new. The Aflac duck has been covered for years. So has the little green lizard with the British accent.
