I loved that lesson yesterday. James says pure religion is to visit the fatherless and the widowed and to stay unspotted from the vices of the world. I think this pretty much sums it up, although I might add faith in Christ is also a part of it. But maybe James was saying that pure faith in Christ would lead to that.
I don't know too much about James other than some people believe he is the half brother of Jesus. It is a lot easier to read the Book of James than other books in the NT. My family has been reading Revelations lately and I am lucky to get one thing out of most chapters.

According to James 1:27, pure religion is essentially defined as helping others and keeping oneself worthy.

James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
To me this means service to your fellow being. Service can take many forms. Pure religion is living your religion. Not only saying what you believe but then going out there and doing it. Making sure that especially the fatherless and the widows have what they need, but also living worthy enough to be able to harken unto the still small voice. I think it's important that we take stock in ourselves and ask ourselves, I'm I just talking the talk? or am I walking the walk as well?

The author of the book of James is Jesus' younger half sibling. The oldest natural child of Joseph and Mary (who has not been a virgin since about 2 months after Jesus was born).
James, not Peter was the chairman of the two church councils which were held during the time period covered by the Book of Acts.
James chapter two is about showing your faith by your actions.
James chapter three is about showing your faith by not waggling your tongue, too much.
James chapter 4 warns about about putting God first, not being boastful.
James chapter five tells us to pray for the sick and warns us about losing our salvation, commending someone who turns come back to the truth.
19My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, 20remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
Its too bad no one ever turned men like Joseph Smith and Brigham Young back to the truth.
However its not too late for anyone reading this to turn back their hearts to God's Word and away from the man made fables the LDS - Latter Day Sinners, tell.

Pure religion is a state of mind that causes you to accept unsupported statements as truth, and not seek to verify them in an objective manner.
