It would be important to know the age of the cat because there could be two reasons.
1) He wants to play and he probably identified your mother as a playing mate. Now the important thing to know is that your mother MUST NOT use her finger or pieces of clothing to play with the cat otherwise he will think that he can play at anytime with her. The easy solution is to simply show him that he must not do this AT ALL TIME, even when your mother plays for real with him. Using waterspray as a punishment is often the best solution but it is very important to punish every time otherwise the cat will think he can do it sometimes and sometimes not which will not solve your problem. Please, no hitting and no screeming. A simple "NO" with a very low tone voice prior to the waterspray will do. Soon enough just a "No" will suffice but you must use the waterspray follwing the "NO" first and not just the "NO". Another things is that you must find a way to punish the cat the minute he does it. It is important that you don't chase the cats around the house to apply the punishment because he will think that it is part of the game.
2) If he's around 1 year old he might try to estblish his dominance over your mother and once it is done, you won't have any problem. Don't say that to your mother cause she will most likely try to dominate the cat in a wrong way and the bits will only gets stronger. If you cats wants to establish dominance over your mother it's because he thinks he can do it and he's probably right. Your mother won't notice it but your cat will soon have his own territory establish over your mother (the fact that he sits at the ends of the bed is a good indicator that he's already at it).

It sounds like the kitty views your mom as a Momma cat. Your mom has to teach the cat that biting isn't acceptable.
If training the cat is a problem, you may want to talk with an animal behaviorist about the best way to break the cat of a bad habit without overly-traumatizing him.
Good luck!

my cat is a male and he has the same problem sometimes, especially in the arms and legs. usually biting is a sign of a dominance problem and it may pass all on its own depending on his age. in the mean time when the cat does this have your mom gently put her hand on top of his head. she needs to establish that she is in control, not him. if he lays his ears back when she does this, thats a good sign it means hes getting the point.

Maybe your mom is doing something that your cat doesn't like. This happened to me too.My cat would jump up from behind me and bite me.My advice to you is to tell your mom to scream really loud the next time your cat tries to bite her.Hopefully your cat will get very startled and never do it again. It worked for me.But if that doesn't work then you should scold your cat.

I think he is trying to get her attention. Is she the one who feeds him most times? My mum, when I lived at home, always fed the cat and when he was hungry he would wrap himself around her ankle and bite like h-ll. So, he wants what he wants when he wants it. Yep he's spoiled. She belongs to him.

he doesnt like her scent
ask her to try changing soaps, shampoo or perfume.
her smell is making him think of her as a rival or someone who might do harm to him.
smells are everything to cats, if its not her smell, then try asking a vet.

Cats can often be territorial if he feels that your mom is invading his territory he will become aggressive...Or it could be that he feels like she doesn't like him.Or it could be that he wants her attention...My cats tend to nip my sister when they want her to pay attention to them...
Hope That Helps,

Maybe he's upset because she won't teach him how to use Spell Check.
I'm surprised you haven't given her a chomp, too.
