As of now, 11/26/07 I believe that there are 3 different packages for the PS3. (40GB, 60GB, and 80GB) I am not 100% sure though. I want to buy a PS3 that has backward compatibility. I believe that the only one that has backward compatibility is the 80GB . Is this right? I've heard that all PS3's no longer include backward compatibility. I do not know which one to get. Please tell me which PS3 has backward compatibility.

Thanks

So far, there has been 4 different configurations of the PS3. There is the 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB PS3's.

The 20GB and 60GB PS3's have the best backward compatibility with PS1 and PS2 games because they have the Emotion Engine chip and them and can play about every PS1 and PS2 game ever made. And both of the 20GB and 60GB PS3's have been discontinued.

The 40GB PS3 cannot play PS2 games, but it can play PS1 games.

The 80GB PS3 is backward compatible with both PS1 and PS2 games but it can't play as many PS1 and PS2 games because it doesn't have the Emotion Engine chip in it, instead it uses Emulation Software to be backward compatible and just can't play as many PS1 and PS2 games.

The 20GB PS3 has been discontinued for a long while now, but the 60GB PS3 was discontinued sometime around this summer, so you may be able to find a 60GB PS3 in some stores, but most stores only sell the 40GB and 80GB PS3's. But I do know that 60GB PS3's are avaliable online though.

If you are looking for the best PS3 with backward compatibility, get the 60GB PS3, but if you can't find one, then get the 80GB PS3.

There's actually 4 models:

20GB & 60GB - these have both been discontinued by Sony, and most stores have sold out of them. These had the best backwards compatibility of any of the PS3s.

The 80GB PS3 uses an emulator (software program) for one of the PS2 CPUs, so it's not quite as good as playing PS2 games. You can check Sony's website for details on which will and will not work. I would not expect Sony to issues updates for the emulator, as Microsoft has done for their 360.

The newest model is the 40GB PS3, which cannot play PS2 games at all. Again, don't hold your breath waiting for Sony to issue any sort of an update that would add this functionality in later on.

So you at least want the 80GB PS3, but might want to try tracking down a 60 or even 20GB model on eBay. Avoid the 40GB altogether.
