Handle payroll and hiring issues.
Employment law with things like discriminatory practices and what you can and can't use to screen employees. They need to keep the company legal. They may handle things like certified payroll and 401K plans and other benefits. Job safety and union issues like recalling from layoff in the correct order.
They screen resumes for job openings and pick which might get a second look some do the primary interview to match skills to openings without bothering managers with all the unqualified.

Well, we aren't all sellouts, but I will agree, Human Resources is the corporate position most likely to conform to the "robotic" stereotype.

HR handles numerous tasks, staffing of employees, new hire training and orientation, filing of all paperwork (tax and insurance), benefits administration, handling of employee problems and or disputes and employee terminations.

I have a PSYC BA but if I could do it over I would have went for my BS in Business Admin or even HR Management. I am getting my MA in HR Management. Depending on the company you may travel, but that will be at a high level position with a large company.

You will need to (sorry to say) imporve your english and grammar skills. (Don't type in shorthand or use slang) Have knowledge of State and Governmental labor laws and have good grades overall because you need excellent written and verbal communication skills and good math skills as well.

Actually, a psychology degree is very suitable for HR departments. Here are something HR does,

Recruitment Strategy Planning
Hiring Processes(recruitment)
Performance Evaluation and Management
Promotions
Redundancy
Industrial and Employee Relations
Record keeping of all personal data.
Compensation, pensions, bonuses etc in liaison with Payroll
Confidential advice to internal 'customers' in relation to problems at work.
