How am I related to my uncle's wife's sister's neice?

Question

Obviously, it's by marriage, but am I related to her at all? If so, how?

Okay, there seems to be some confusion, as the board seems to be split down the middle.

This is my aunt and uncle's only/first marriage.

I'm not sure if the neice is my aun't s neice also, because their family is all screwy.

If the neice is my cousin, what place would she be? 2nd, 3rd, 2nd 8x removed?...

No crap! I stated that the relation would only be my marriage!

Now, for the people who actually DO read the entire question:
If it turns out she was my 2nd cousin, I would say, "She's my second cousin, by marriage."

Your right! By marriage! But many would say you aren't at all!

Most relatives related from marriages, usually only go as far as In -Laws! and the husbands and wifes nieces and nephews,aunts, uncles and grandparents! Out side of that relative circle, like you! aren't really considered a relative when it reaches that far out! But she is your Uncle's niece by marriage because his wife is the niece's aunt! So to pin point it down to exact relation, she would be a cousin to you by marriage! But not really a relative to you! So to be put at a better way of explaining the niece to others for you, would be your Uncle's niece! Or your Uncle's wife's niece! Or your Uncle's sister in-Laws niece! But it could be your Uncle's wife, her brothers or another sister's daughter! You didn't go far enough into details how many other brothers and sisters your Uncle's wife has!!!!

Mother in-law.Father in-Law,Brothers and Sisters In- Law, But when it gets to the Uncles and Aunts and Cousins In-Laws, Well there not really relatives to the Spouse that there not really his or her relatives! (Only by Marriage!)

But back to your Question, The niece could actually be your niece if You were actually marriad to your uncle's Wife's brother!!!! Then she would be your niece! But if your a long generation relative kind of person, then she would be a cousin by marriage! If you really wanted to stretch it that far, Most don't go that far into by marriage relatives! Your Uncle marriad into that relationship, so many are his relatives now by marriage, But your not really related that far down just because your Uncle marriad into the relatives!

I thought I would just throw that part in just in case it was a trick Question!!!

I have the same situation. My uncle's second wife had two kids by a previous marriage. We called each other cousins for ease but we know that we are not related at all.

NO YOU ARE NOT RELATED!!!! What Mind Bender said is 100% correct. There is NO SUCH THING as "2nd cousin by marriage". Obviously, most of the people answering this question are not very well educated or versed on the ins and outs of genealogy, and you are not either if you are going to believe that crap.

Why are you taking the advice of those who are just spouting opinions instead of those, like Mind Bender, who are well-knowledgeable about genealogy? Also, why are you so determined to be related to this person? Is it because they are famous and you want to be able to brag that they are your cousin or something? Get over that. YOU ARE NOT RELATED to that person AT ALL, in any way, shape, or form. That is the way genealogy works.

She isn't related. As soon as you say "wife" or "husband", then there is no relationship to that person (or to anyone from that person's family)

Genealogical relationships (blood relationships) are established at the birth of the youngest person AND can never be changed. If the relationship didn't exist at birth OR can be changed, it isn't genealogical.

For example, you are NOT related to your spouse. Why? It wasn't established at birth - they weren't your spouse when either of you were born - AND IT CAN BE CHANGED - you could get a divorce. That's the same with ANY marriage.

Imagine if your Uncle never married this person - you clearly would not be related. If he divorced her? Not related. A genealogical relationship cannot be changed - and clearly the marriage of your uncle (or subsequent divorce) to this person would "change" the relationship - thus it is NOT a genalogical (blood) relationship.

If you put this into the Family Relationship calculator button on Family Tree Maker or similiar it would say "No direct relationship". As you have said, it is only a connection by marriage, not by blood, which in genealogy terms does not really count.

Your uncle's wife's sister's niece would be your cousin. Because the "niece" is the daugher of a person's brother or sister.

My Uncle Odell is married to my Aunt Cora. Cora's sister is Bobbie. Bobbie's niece is Cheryl. Cheryl is the daughter of Uncle Odell and Aunt Cora and Cheryl is also my cousin.

If the marriage is your Uncle's second or third marriage, you and your Step-Aunt's sister aren't officially related and neither is her daughter. But if you want get into semantics your Uncle's Wife's sister's niece would be your cousin twice removed.

Your uncle can be traced to the same parants as your father or mother.

You uncle's wife is only related to you because she is married to your uncle. In reality, she is not related to you, but her husband is.

I assume that your aunt's sister's niese is a niese by marriage or she would also be your aunt's niese or her daughter.

In any case, that niese is not related to you, except in the sense that all humans are related (through Adam, and Eve).

Relationships by marriage only applies to the one married to your blood relative, and it does not extend to their extended families who have no genetic relationship to you.
