Ok well the Leica I am giving my wife for x-mass can except 55mm filters. Leica sells many filters to fit it but was snooping though one of my wifes camera bags and found a lot of UV filter and Polerized glass Filters that said 55mm. Are most filters universal as long as the mm is matched or will I need to by the specific leica filter. Just curious to see if some of them would fit?

This may seem like a stupid question but I in no way want to damage this camera by using the wrong accessories. Any insight would be great.

There should be very little difference from one 55mm filter to another, since it refers to the diameter of the lens. Different manufacturers of the filters may have variations in the threads used to attach the filters to the lens though, so double-check that they will properly attach, and you'll be all set.
Take one (filter) with you when you purchase the camera, and just try it on. If you're careful when you do this, the material on the filter should be softer than the lens itself and if it's not exactly right should result in no damage to the lens.

Any 55mm diameter filter will fit. Period. Hoya, Tiffen and B+W are all excellent filters. Buying the Leica filters would be more for looks than anything.
