Well if you were talking to an atheist and he said that then yes, an atheist would say something like that.
As for what it means, it appears to be a lighthearted take on the crucifixion story which the atheist you were talking to linked back to the topic of Christmas trees which was apparently the theme of your discussion.
Of course the origin of Christmas trees actually has nothing to do with the crucifixion or any other element of Christianity.

I think you are making this up. I cannot imagine any atheist I know being this insensitive to your beliefs. Also the origin of the Xmas tree has nothing to do with Xianity. Most atheists I know do not believe in a personal god nor in the validity of the bible, but few would deny that some at least of Jesus's story is historical reality.

Whether the story of Jesus is true or fiction, it is a story of the victory of human spirituality over opprerssion and hate. For non-Xians there is a HUGE difference between spirituality and religion. Today's Xianity (in America at least) is part of the oppression and hate side of that equation.

Ah yes – Jesus birthday was never celebrated by early Christians. It was during the first melding of Church and State that Christmas was born.

He might have been attempting a joke about this verse.

Galatians 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,"

Because he has a truly tasteless sense of humor and he would not see it as humorous if it was someone he truly loved who was the ornament. Some people have no social filters.

It was rude. Although I have heard lots of Christians claim the reason for a tree was because of the cross. I thought we were celebrating his birth, not death!

Ignorance at its best.

the "christmas" tree comes from the pagan celebration. the evergreen tree was a symbol of life.

as far as the comment he made, it means nothing. its just his sense of humor. or possibly something he said to spark reaction from you. (which he obviously got)

It means he's being sarcastic, cynical and even condescending... and probably thinks he's pretty funny. Whatever he's doing, he's liking getting a 'rise' out of you and will be back for more "entertainment".

What makes more sense?

That weird answer or Lion of Judah's piety?

(See Lion's Answer for a taste of Christian love....I'm honestly glad these nuts no longer run the show!)
