I'm sure that he was most likely preoccupied with the intense pain of having the bones of his hands and feet smashed by nails and hammers, and then having the weight of his body suspended from the wounds. There may have been a sense of injustice and indignation involved as well.
He was being tortured.
I wouldn't think that witty retorts were a priority for him at that moment. In all likelihood, he was probably desperate for the end to his excruciating pain, either through shock, unconsciousness, or death. Mercy on the part of the people who had stuck him up there in the first place may have entered his thought process too, but given the circumstances, I'm betting that he wasn't thinking too clearly on any level and just wanted the torment to end.
It may have even crossed his mind at some point that maybe if he'd kept his mouth shut or been more tactful or diplomatic with the powers-that-were he might not have found himself in the bind that he was in.
In any case, I don't see how one-upping the Romans in attendance would have helped him in any way, even if he had the physical capacity to engage in bon-mot swapping.

he suffered for our sins that those who come back to the God and have relationship with him can be counted as his children. as far as the turn the other cheek that means if over load someones donkey about the true word of God. If someone comes off the street and hit you diliberatly , you deck them. Thats self defense. Christians aren't secound class citizens.
P.S. he did because he loves us.

He wasn't mocked, he was challenged. He was asked by one of the two thieves to prove that he was the son of God by saving himself and them. Of course, immediately the other thief chastised him. For doing what? Asking for proof. Notice that, instead of providing the proof for which he'd been asked, Jesus instead says to the thief who defends him, "Tomorrow you will be with me in paradise." I wonder what the first thief was thinking. I bet it was something along the lines of, "I knew it. This guy was full of it all along."

Because He was perfect and He was the one who would fulfill the prophecies from the Old Testament. If he sinned then it would mean he wasn't the messiah

He was THE example of turning the other cheek. And what happened to Him was an example of a big sin, to shame others.

It's kind of hard to come up with a witty riposte when you're nailed to something.
