so-so. Atheists biggest strength is the rationality/objectivity they approach the world.
The bible is certainly filled with incongruities. Whereas these may be easy to see/ellucidate, what purpose does this accomplish, more than disproving the bible. Atheism denies ANY personal god, not just the Christian god.
But generalizing a little more, I agree. Bibles, coupled with the history of religion, show humans extreme, sometimes desperate need to understand/control the reasons behind all the bad things in the world. They want the control so much that they'll create God or Zeus, to think they have control.
This irrationality and things of the like are the real potent arguments for atheism. I think.

It means to me that, Isaac Asimov, though an intelligent man, had a sleeping spirit, and didn't wake up. I don't know much about the man, an only read a little of what he wrote, but if that's his stance on the Bible to the day of his death, then he remained condemned, according to Jesus Christ.
I wonder what he thought when he got to this, after reading the entire Old Testament and STILL not knowing why condemnation is apparent? How does anyone with a spirit that is awake do that?
17 "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son."

The quote, if true, was attributed to one of the more well read athiests in modern times. There have been many many people who would say that the Bible, properly read, is the most powerful book ever written.

True that!
years ago my wife gave me an article where it stated that some religious schools had stopped requiring children to read the bible cover to cover.
Apparently that caused them to ask to many questions and the challenge the accuracy of the bible. AS a result more children were abandoning their faith.
The schools went back to a structured curriculum of teaching the bible and telling them what it meant and how to think.

i think is a mostly true statement
and an insightful one
showing that some atheists will go as far as to read the book of something they're trying to disprove, just so they can pick fault
it's a poke at some part of human nature
the bible also tends to contradict itself because of how God changes his characteristics between the old and new testament
i personally don't understand theism or atheism, as long as someone is happy with their life and is not a destructive member of society, i don't see why we all have to be pigeon-holed into religions/anti-religions
however i do respect people's rights to have religion as some people find it works
anyways, nice quote

I doubt you'll get any answer that doesn't indicate that Asimov wrote science fiction or compares him to L. Ron Hubbard, even though he was brilliant. I don't think most people know his educational background, so I hope I'm proven wrong.
Otherwise, I don't base my faith on the Bible or other Western texts, so for me it's not relavent.
EDIT: I've been proven wrong about the people here. Huh.

Personally disagree with Dr. Asimov.
I have yet to find a Dr. Asimov book with edges of gold like many Bibles have.
Much of the modern English language (common words/common expressions) came directly from the KJV.
That's Dr. Asimov's view and he's entitled to have his own view it seems to me.
Everyone is.

I agree. Too many contradictions and people have just corrupted what was once a divine book. The true word of God is the Quran. The proof is in the link below. I DARE you to look at that link and then come tell me the Quran isn't the word of God.

Makes no sense.
PROPERLY READ, it's the most potent force for the existence for God.
To listen and follow what Asimov or any other atheist espouses only allows you to go as high as THEIR mind. You can listen and apply science but it can only take you so far. IF you want to explore or enter a non-changing Reality, you must accept feedback from those whose minds transcend this limited, material existence.

I agree with the spirit of the quote, but I disagree with the specific point. I don't think the Bible makes the case for atheism. However, I think it makes a legitimate case for not believing in the Christian God.
An atheist, however, must reject belief in all Gods, not just that one.
