this is normal dog behavior and you could get it some help by training it and learning about normal dog behavior.
see link for more on normal animal behavior - it's a good place to start.

All dogs do it, it's their way of gathering information about where the person has been etc. You can train a dog out of doing it, so I'd suggest try getting an empty pop (soda) bottle, put some stones in and the top on, then whenever your dog goes near someone shake it once to scare them, tell them "Leave" or "No", when they do what you want praise the dog. Be consistent with it, do it every time it does that behaviour, your dog will soon get the message.

The first of the senses that your dog gets is his nose, then eyes, then hearing. So his world starts with a sniff.
I call that reading your book.
From a sniff he can tell, who you are and what you have been doing, your age, and etc.... since he gets that information from his animal friends, he does the same for his human friends. He isn't trying to be embarrassing or invasive it's just his way of saying, Hi. How are you?
And it wouldn't bother him if you sniffed back. Don't be upset, most dog people are used to it. Tell you friends when they come in to ignore him and don't make eye contact, or attempt to pet him, until he make the approach.

Dogs cannot talk or shake hands, they communicate and find out about each other by sniffing - not a problem, just doggy behavior.
Quite normal - now if your friends are doing this to your dog - or you ======

It's actually the way for dogs to get to know the person. It's the same reason why dogs sniff eachother's ends. They're introducing themselves to eachother.

with guidence you dog will stop this behavior he doesn't need punishment because what he is doing is natrual to him his way of saying hello, just tell him no when he does and praise him when he obeys and it will be behind you in no time :o) good luck and always remember dogs are all about love and praise and you will get better results them with yelling they only understand your tone anyway not the words you say
