Actually that is exactly what I did when I was laid off from work
I volunteered to help children in an after school program that was helping them to learn English (I live in Israel).
I was very glad that I was doing something good and helpful with my time until I found a job.
I think it's an excellent idea for you to volunteer now - it's also good for self-esteem which sometimes suffers when we lose our jobs even if it's not our fault.
Volunteering is a responsibility so I don't see how it can be irresponsible for you to volunteer when you don't have a job yet. Anyway, volunteering is a good thing - so only good can come out of it and by the way, I love animals too.

Not at ALL. I think it's very admirable to volunteer at an animal shelter while you are not working. You can put it on a resume' or application. Showing a potential employer that you did something while looking for work. As far as continuing with it, it would depend on what kind of job you got and how much time you had to do volunteer work. You never know, if you are good at the animal shelter, it might lead to a good job there. I absolutely love animals, and I think you can't go wrong volunteering there.

I volunteer at my son's school and I don't have a job at the moment . I think you get more back from volunteering than you can give because it makes you feel good about yourself.
It will also show any future employer that you have the "get up and go" to do something while you looked for a job especially if the skills you learn can be shown to be useful in your new job.
Good luck with volunteering and getting the new job.

Make the most of your time while you're not employed and start volunteering tomorrow. When I wasn't working I volunteed teaching english at a centre for asylum seekers. It was the most rewarding thing I have ever done, really enjoyable and I met so many good people. It also helped guide me into the job I do now, which I love. Don't put it off, call the animal centre tomorrow morning and start volunteering as soon as you. Good luck, and don't delay.

I think thats a very good idea. Trust me Ive been unemployed for long stretches at a time and pretty soon you go nuts because you have nothing to do. It'll give you something to do, give help to poor deserving animals, and get you out there to meet possible employers. Also if you happen to get an interview somewhere you can mention that you do volunteer work. It'll look great that you're willing to work, even when you arent getting paid for it. I say sign up asap. and good for you for wanting to help animals

I think it is a great idea. You will be of great help to any organisation or charity while you are in between jobs.
There is also a possibility your career might lie in a different direction and you could find you have a talent in caring for animals.
As long as you explain to them that you are actively searching for work and you may have to leave on short notice, I am sure that any animal welfare group would be delighted to have you volunteer with them.
Good luck.

Volunteer asap. It will look good on your CV, potential employers are likely to be impressed, and you will make contacts. I have always thought that it is often a case of who you know, rather than what you know, that gets you into employment. It will also be an opportunity for you to get good references from someone who has seen you work, rather than just a character reference.
I am now retired, and I do volunteer work for Cats' Protection. It is so worthwhile, and although I miss the little ones when they go to good homes, I am so happy for them. It is very rewarding.

There's nothing at all irresponsible about that; it's a way to keep you busy and for them to get help that they sorely need. As long as you keep job searching, what's the problem? Volunteer work looks good on a resume, too.

I am a manger and I hire paid workers and volunteers. Invariably when a volunteer has worked for us and a paid job becomes available, they are more likely to get it. I am always very impressed with people who are prepared to put themselves out and do voluntary work. It shows them to be hard working, compassionate and caring individuals. When volunteers are with us we all help them to look for work if this is what they want - one volunteer I took on is now Manager of a service equivilent to mine, and I have to say is fantastic at it. Volunteers are generally brilliant because they are with you because they want to be - if they didnt they just wouldnt come back.

You can be quite the humanitarian if you want to, but are those dogs and cats going to pay your bills. You have to think logically. You only volunteer when you can afford to. If you can afford to spend your time giving back to the world go for it. But, I hope you have a secured place to stay and a steady source of food. Otherwise, what you want to do is just plain foolish.
