My GP says the results show damage to something that effects my motor skills. Is anyone familiar with these results that can tell me exactly what they mean? I hurt my back at an aluminum plant about 10 years ago and the pain has never gone away completely. I am just looking for some info until I see my doc next week< I am going for and MRI this evening thanks for anyone with some insight!

Doubt a EMG would reveal damage to any disc. Pain before the nerve loss would! However it does show if the nerves are functioning and obviously yours are not 100%, therefore they are now going to do a MRI to see if the problem is with the Discs. However their are many reasons for nerve problems, so they are just taking it a step at a time.

Think of EMG like an electrical circuit tester. You put two probes at various points on a wire and see if signal is conducted, if not, you know where the break is. Same concept here, the EMG reveals where the break is, most likely near your spine. EMG doesn't tell you there's damage to the disc, it is inferred. Could be anything that causes the interruption of signal. Inflamed muscles, foreign object (old bullet injury), a fragmented portion of the disc, disc itself, etc. MRI is a more definitive answer.

your spinal cord has areas that are for motor response/relay (lower motor and upper motor neurons, along with a relay tracts, etc.) .... if these areas of the cord are damaged, there is a possibility of loss of a nervous relay to/from certain motor units. The MRI will allow you to see what areas of the cord is damaged, and this will aid in pinpointing the motor deficits.
