We just got a Maltese/Shitzu mix and he has tear stains. Someone told me you can put them on a special diet that helps them not have tear stains. Is this true? Is there a product we can use when bathing him too?

Diamond eye is a stain remove for topical use
tylan can be given orally to prevent new stains you can buy it at a farm store as an injectable antibiotic I will find and add a link to its use for this. You can also buy the tylan powder at a vet or order it online.

Make sure you do not have a tear duct infection going on.
Also avoid foods with dyes in them, dogs don't care if food is rainbow colored.

Cut away all the stained hair you can to start then use the topical to slowly remove the rest.

I raised chinchilla and shaded silver persians, with a new cat I cut away what I could, used tear stain remover and wiped the eyes at least daily and never had to use the tylan as a food additive. Simply wiping with a baby wipe daily will generally keep new stains from forming and if not then wipe with the diamond eye or similar product.

1. Veterinary checkup by a Veterinary Opthamologist to make sure there is no blockage tear ducts, extra eyelashes rubbing on eyes (these can be microscopic which is why you want to go to a specialist)
2. Eliminate any food with beet root pulp. The best foods are Innova, Solid Gold, Wellness etc... Beetroot pulp increases staining (tear and saliva).

There are a few tear stain removers.. including Diamond Eyes. There is also a capsule/powder you can add to their food... which is essentially a low dose of antibiotics (something you DON'T want to do on an ongoing basis).

What I would do is try a stain remover. Then if it doesn't work cut away the stained hair, and then go to the groomers and tell them you want to cut his eyelashes and hair around his eyes. (this causes tearing)

the tear stains are caused by a protien in the dogs tears and saliva. putting them on a low protien diet could help. most otc remedies andsupplements do not work. and you have to clean the hair daily to keep it from tearing. have the groomer clip the hair under the eyes (this should be done anyways for hygiene).
