I have a puppy that is about 4 months old and he is always peeing. i know that when they get excited they have a tendacy to do this but i want it to stop. i've been told i should get him fixed because it will make him pee less, but i will not do that to him. i love him to death but he gets on my nerves. how long does this hyper personality and frequent urination usually last?

for one, i'm not getting my dog neutered because nobody is snipping his balls. secondly, whoever said it was madatory for dogs to be fixed is not true, thats like saying its madatory for a woman to have a hysterectomy. and i'm not about to pay all that money for some type of canine birth control. thanx!

PetSmart sells a "wrap" to put around male dogs. It attaches with velcro. It's supposed to stop him from peeing but if he has an accident, just throw the wrap in the washer. It won't hurt unless you put it on too tight.

First of all, what won't you do to him??? Get him neutered? It is something that absolutely MUST get done (they don't know the difference) if you want him to not mark on everything and every one. I work at a boarding and daycare facility and I am a trainer and I have seen what un-neutered males do, and yes, you DO WANT HIM NEUTERED! Neutering him will prevent marking teritorry later on down the road but at this age will do nothing to fix this issue.

Second, if he is 4 months old, then he doesn't know any better. His bladder muscles won't be fully developed until at least 6 months. You can expect him to hold it for 1-2 hours and each week he gets older add an extra 15 min - 1/2 hour to his ability to hold it.
But how often are you taking him outside? It should be once ever 1-2 hours. Set a kitchen timer and take him out no matter what every time it goes off. If he is going a lot more often than that, it is probably a bladder infection (which is very common in puppies) and can be easily fixed by bringing him in to your vet and getting some antibiotics.

Third: Most dogs do not pee every time they get excited. How excited is he getting? Keep things calm when he gets greeted and try to prevent it at all costs.

Is he squatting and doing little puddles, or is he scent-marking all over the place? Dogs will always want to go where there is a scent of urine, so if you haven't removed all trace of it from indoors then they will always have a strong instinct to keep going in those spots.

The dog won't know the difference when you neuter him, it's all in the mind of their owners.

He will be better to not want to be fighting other males all the time and even getting lost forever or hit by a car chasing after a female on heat. He will always want to be escaping and they can pick up the scent from as far as 5 kilometers or more.

At 4 months of age he would be due a check-up with the vet anyway, has he had all his vaccination shots and follow-ups yet? Maybe get the vet to check him out.

If he is fully immunized and had booster shots you could start taking him for walks after meals to encourage him to empty out his bladder.

Sounds like you have quite alot to learn about housetraining. Babies don't learn it that quickly, so why do you expect your dog to? It is only four months old-a baby. And why wouldn't you want to get him fixed? If you love him as you say you do, you should be making that appointment! If your dog gets too excited, you need to train him to be calmer. The "hyper" personality? It could last your dog's entire life! You need to realize that now and get some training done. There are some great books all about houstraining your dog, and just about everywhere you can find a puppy obedience class to enroll in with your dog. Get started now, before you lose your cool.

Edit: I guess it's too late-you have already lost your cool, and your mind. What a shame that some people are allowed to own animals when all they want them for is that ATM quality. And just so you know, you won't be making much on the puppies-they stay with mom. All you could hope for is a stud fee, or a pup. That's if anyone is nuts enough to let your dog near theirs.

I have a pup, he's a little over a year old now. When he was younger I had to take him out every hour so he wouldn't pee on the floor, but he got the hang of it. We also crate trained him. It teached him to hold it when you aren't home because dogs HATE peeing where they sleep, so he won't pee in the crate unless it's an emergency. You just have to take them out as soon as you get him out.

I didn't get my dog fixed. He's okay EXCEPT that when there is a girl dog in heat he will not shut the hell up!! And it lasts for 3 months! If you think he's getting on your nerves now just wait. Still didn't get him fixed tho. I'm going to go to a free clinic b/c I don't want to pay all that money for it.

It depends on what breed he is. Most dogs stop excited peeing after a year or so. The best way to fix it now is to try and destract him when you know something is going to make him pee (like having him sit when someone comes in the house)

You will be doing yourself and your dog a big favor by getting him fixed. If you are not breeding him there is no point in keeping him intact. Every time female comes into heat he is going to try to get to her.

My husband has always NOT wanted to have his male dogs neutered. We currently have a Corgi. Wonderful little animal and very smart. However when a neighbors female came into heat we absolutely had to keep him in the house or he would get out of the yard and go down there. Then would not let the owners get into the yard! We had to neuter him in order to keep him home, safe and not trouble the neighbors.

Trust me he is not going to act differently and he won't miss it.

Here's a piece of sound advice. If your dog pees when he's excited, don't address him in any way and that includes looking, touching or talking to him until he's calm. If you fail to follow these simple rules, get used to wiping up pee.

Unless you have an award winning champion breeder, why would you not get him "fixed". He will be more calm and less restless and you'll like your dog more...besides it is the responsible thing to do. There are already 1000s of accidents in the shelters waiting to be euthanized already.

I just adopted a 5 year old Chihuahua, and I could not believe how much he pees!!! So I can relate, I know exactly what you are talking about!! So I guess, if you don't get them neutered, they will always be pee-ers,(HA
