I never majored in Photography because I knew it's not easy making it your career. Plus..... I know once I major in something I really love, I won't love it anymore. Haha that's the way it is.
You don't even make a lot of money if you end up being a photographer.
Statistics show that for a photographer in 2002 the average annual salary was $24,040. The lowest 10% earned less than $14,640, the middle 50% between $17,740 and $34,910 while the highest 10% earned upwards of $49,920. For a photographer employed by a newspaper or periodical the average annual salary was $31,460, while in other professional and scientific services the average was $21,860. http://www.adigitaldreamer.com/articles/photography-salary.htm
That's not a lot of money if ya ask me. Sure, you'll be happy because you'll love doing something you love as a job... but you have to be realistic, you're not gonna live the good life (money-wise).

Being realistic, the market is becoming more and more diluted. Almost everyone who buys a higher end DSLR seems to think they have automatically become a professional photographer. Just look at some of the questions asked in here and in Cameras. Unfortunately, few people really care about quality. "Uncle Bill has a really nice camera and he can take my wedding pictures."
If you can land a position with a larger newspaper and consistently produce really outstanding images you might be able to move up to one of the magazines.
If you are willing to serve as an assistant to a successful wedding or portrait photographer you might have a chance at becoming established.
In real estate the old saying is "Location. Location. Location." For a photographer it applies equally. Live in an area where there is a lot of money and perhaps you can establish yourself as the really high-end wedding and/or portrait photographer. Live in a smaller community or rural
area and your chances are lessened.
IMO you should first decide exactly what type of photography you enjoy doing the most. Then start building a portfolio of your absolute best images. Get it out on the internet and to any company that your research has found that uses your type of images. Plan on working a regular job to pay the bills.

Just like there are hundreds of thousands of actors and musicians out there who never "make it big" there are hundreds and thousands of photographers who don't either. BUT, they are making good and comfortable livings doing what they love to do.
I love the freedom I have, the odd hours, the unusual places I go and being around people and cultures I would have never experienced if I were not their photographer.

I would say that 10% of people get to do it as a full time paid job and 1% get to go in the direction they are interested in, so you have to work hard to be the best every day or you are wasting your time
good luck

I think it's a good hobby.
As far as a career, I think you would have to be in at for a while and have gotten your name and your work out there. Perhaps you should enter some contests to start out.

I have considered this, too. I'm not sure, because to really make it big, you'd have to take pics of celebs and stuff, and no on e really likes them, so I'm not sure.
