Apparently you haven't noticed, but believing in a God doesn't do anything to stop people from being "bad and evil" either.
Just look around you with your eyes open: essentially ALL of the evil done in the world is done by people who believe that there is a God, with quite a bit of it done by people who believe in the God of the Christian Bible. Attempts to place the blame on nonbelievers would be laughable if there weren't so reminiscent of the tactics of Hitler and Stalin.

The problem is that we are all born with sin, it's in us all. We all sin in one way or another, and only through Christ can we change. This doesn't make us perfect, it just changes us. We become a new creation with a desire to please God. You can't do that living a sinning lifestyle, regardless of the sin. God doesn't differentiate between different types of sin, to Him, sin is sin, and only the Blood of Jesus can save us from eternal damnation. Remember, if you have broken one of the Ten Commandments, you have broken them all. On Earth, we suffer the consequences of our actions in an Earthly manner ( prison, death penalty, etc. ), on judgment day, we will have to answer to God, and those who are not saved by the Blood of Jesus will be cast into hell.

Simply stated, Nothing. We are a fallen race too occupied with our self-identity. We're all sinners. We were created good in the image of God. Only at the fall of man do we come short of what we were intended for. Without the set moral code which God has lain in all of us, without the fulfillment of love between creator and creation . . . we continually fall short.

You have been lied to by your pastor.
Religion doesn't stop violence and murder, it justifies it and promotes it in most cases.
In fact many killers heard a voice that they attributed to God and then found justification in the bible to carry out the acts.
Remember the mother who drowned all her kids in Texas, God told her to do it, to keep them safe from the devil.
Evil behavior is usually a result of bad chemistry in the brain.

I'm not a killer, or even an injurer. So I don't know.
As for changing by yourself, yes -- I've done it several times.
But you shouldn't presume to speak for atheists, cause what you said was quite meaningless.

A tree is known by its fruit. There is a distinct division between the children of God and seed of Satan. Without Gods grace it is impossible to turn from sin. Revelations ends with let the righteous remain righteous and unjust be unjust still undoubtedly purposed to prove Gods sovereignty in all things.

Most killers already believe in God. In fact, that's what spurs many murders.

Stop to think about this.....
maybe he is a confused believer that read the bible and it said thou shall not kill,
but read all the killing in it.
Maybe he didn't know what to do!
