So, my husband and I got married in August, and we're trying to figure out how to file taxes this year. I have lived and worked in Minnesota all year, and will be here until April next year. He's in the military, stationed in CA, but in Iraq from Sept '07-April '08. Should we file jointly for federal taxes and separately for state taxes? Or is there some way to file jointly for both?

Also, he has already invested 4k in his Roth IRA this year, and I am thinking about starting mine as well. Can we each contribute the 4k if we file jointly for federal but separate for state?
Any help is much appreciated!

What state is he a legal resident of? If it's MN then you will just file joint Fed & MN returns. He does NOT file a CA return in this case as CA can NOT tax his mil pay.

If he kept is state citizenship in Minnesota file jointly. If not you will need to file as married filing separately.
