My dog ate a brick. Should he even be able to do this?

When I went to get Sargent from his kennel yesterday he had a brick in his mouth. One side looked brand new (its from a fire pit we're in the process of building), but the other side was worn down quite a bit. There arent any actual pieces missing, its just worn and pitted. That and the pieces in the corner make me think he didnt eat any.

Is this normal?
Im figuring he needs stronger chew toys. Right now he has a black Kong for his main chew toy. What is tougher than that?

Well you could get a big raw hide bone, they are sometimes tricky. I would keep him busy when you can't have attention on him 24/7. hope i helped. vote best=]

He probably was just teething on the brick, but I would cal your vet to see if there is anything toxic in the brick or cement that you use for mortar that could be a health concern for your dog.

Giving your dog a variety of strong chew toys will help and making sure that you give your dog plenty of exercise should help also.

Get him a bone to chew and tougher toys.

Brick can be actually pretty soft (depending upon what type of brick you are using). We just had our brickwork done on our house and my dog got ahold of one as well. He was fine. I know I was able to crumble it just with my fingers so it was pretty soft.

They have toys at petsmart for this. Here is a link. My dog loves nylabones. They are safe and last for a very very long time. There is an indestructable ball as well. I dont know how well it works.

I have also seen tire looking toys there as well. They are small and pretty tough. They are like mini tires. Those may be good if you can find them. I cannot remember the name though.

Don't worry about him he is OK . chewing on anything in sight is what a dog does . If you want something more heavy duty go to a feed store and get a beef leg bone it will last about 2 weeks and is better for him than bricks .

It's not as uncommon as you think, but it is something to be discouraged as it could wear his teeth down. Can you somehow restrict his access to the bricks?

Perhaps a nice raw meaty marrowbone or something like that for him to gnaw on would interest him better. Do you put tasty things in the Kong to keep him interested?

my Lab would chew and carry around rocks and chew on them. I wouldn't worry, but it could wear down his teeth. Stay with the Kong and keep an eye on what Sargent is dragging around with him.

The black kongs are pretty tough. If he isn't breaking chunks from it, he should be OK with that. As for the brick, I can't imagine it would poison him, but it would be quite abrasive to his teeth.

Some dogs will eat anything, rocks, medicine bottles, plants, locks, keys, Christmas ornaments, etc. Especially Labs. If you have an experimental eater and don't want to pay some expensive surgery bills.......keep him in large tough chewable and watch him closely. lol

i wouldn't worry so much about it...mine chews on rocks, bricks, cement blocks, mulch, branches, anything she can get in her mouth, in addition to all the chew toys i've bought her and it hasn't affected her....he's probably just chewing on it and not really swallowing any of it

if you looking for a good tough toy "boomer balls" are a good one ,we used them at battersea dogs home's annex in windsor because of the size and material they are hard to get a grip on so near impossable to chew but bless 'em they keep trying! so it serves 2 purposes anti chew and entertainment (for human and dog)
