Chances are if it was during the 80's it was being abused. The use of Ritalin requires a very strict blood testing schedule to monitor for liver changes so yes it shares the unique possibility of being harmful to the liver but rarely is without abuse or preexisting conditions. Personally I would be more concerned with the side effects. Some people simply need to be medicated and exploring your options is really the best way sometimes even better then accepting the first thing your doctor offers. When I took it I went from a A and B student to an almost all E and D student, I as well as many ADD and ADHD students have a unique ability to finding other ways to solve problems and Ritalin took away the creative element that was required to do this. I personally have learned to cope harnassing the natural curiosity involved with ADD and it has done very little to hurt me, certainly far less then Ritalin had.

My young cousin almost died back in the early 80's due to liver damage that this drug caused. He ended up having to have a liver transplant. He is 30 now and still sickly.
