I'd go with something productive, Try an acoustic guitar with lessons, See the site www.fortheloveofmusic1.com for affordable string instruments. My parents got my younger brother a CD, as in the money saving account, when he was about that age, he is now 23 and has a better retirement than my husband and I do. Another might be a laptop (with a worthless gaming card) so that he has one when he leaves for college in a few years. Extreme on MTV is not real life, I don't think most teens realize that.

Every 16 year old wants a car, even if it's not a brand new Mercedes! If that's definitely out of the question, think about getting him a new ipod or cell phone or some neat little gadget like that. Sixteen year old boys love to talk on the phone and listen to their music!

Every 16 year old wnats a car!!! But if that is out of your budget you could always throw hima surprise party with his friends. He would love that. Just make sure that you don't plan on being involved in the partying he probably wouldn't appreciate that. Try staying in another room. Concert tickets are also a good idea or a cell phone if he doesn't already have one.

a gaming console he doesnt have already and some extra games/controllers and guitar hero 3
an ipod nano with a $50 itunes card (suggest that he goto the library to get free cds to add to itunes!)
gift cards to his favorite stores to get shoes/clothes
a prepaid visa so he can go buy whatever he wants (load it with a couple hundred dollars and let that be his only gift)

What's his passion? Music, gaming, biking, skateboarding? Figure that out first then go from there.
