It's not the length(keep it under 2-3 minutes), but the content that's important! Good luck! ;-)=

Dear Mr. Best Man, Believe it or not, there is an etiquette to speeches given at weddings - from who says what about who, to the order of the speakers. Mr. Best Man...Now that you've committed yourself to participating in this insanity, and pasted that phony I'm-so-excited-and-honored-that-you-aske... smile on your face, you'll need to figure out just what you want to say, how to say it and how not to make a complete and total *** out of yourself in front of all the wedding guests, right? That's where we come in! First off, as the Best Man you need to know a few of the basics, like who says what about who (or whom). And what NOT to say! And how to appear as the self-confident Best Man and in control of yourself when all you really want to do it pee your pants! Ready? Dear Mr. Best Man, 1. The Best Man toasts the Bride and Groom - the Best Man speech is supposed to be a toast to the Bride and Groom and their new life together. Without a doubt, the Best Man speech is the most important of all the speeches, for a couple of reasons. It's typically the first speech, so you get to warm the crowd up and wow them with your brilliance, your wit, your wisdom and your ability to articulate your views. Oh, no pressure there! A good Best Man's speech should include a little story about how the Bride and Groom met (either funny or touching), and if possible, a funny or even embarrassing story involving the Groom and the Best Man - but here's where you need to be careful to adjust the content to your audience. You'll probably have grandmas and kids listening, so keep it at least semi-clean. No references to that incident with the Girls Gone Wild crew while you were on spring break, and any references to past relationships the Groom might have had will get you shot by the bride, so don't even go down that road! Especially if she's 1) armed and 2) has a temper! 2. The Groom is next - he gives thanks the Bride's parents (especially if they paid for the wedding!), then thanks his Best Man , the Bridesmaids, and then toasts his Bride.

Speeches are long (anywhere from 10 minutes on up to an hour) and their content varies widely. The best man should be giving a toast to the bride and groom, not a speech. Toasts are very short (no more than two to three minutes), the point of which is to wish them well in their life together.

No longer than 5 minutes. I would stay between 3-5 minutes. That way you have enough time to make it heartfelt, but also keep your audience engaged. People tend to tune out after 5 minutes, no matter how creative and well-thought-out your speech is.

Two minutes. Be sure you 1. Thank and compliment the guests for being there. Introduce yourself and how you know the couple if not related 2. Congratulate the parents and the hosts of the beautiful wedding 3. Gush over the beautiful bride and say how lucky the best man is to have her 4. Tell ONE funny story about the groom 5. Invite the guests to rise and toast the future of the happy couple

Smile, speak with confidence

Under 3 minutes is good...otherwise you tend to leave people falling asleep in their gravy.

But definitely make it GOOD. I was at a wedding recently where the best man didn't even write or practice...he jotted crap down during the photo shoot that morning...and worse yet ADMITTED to doing so! It was horrible.

No longer than 2 minutes. Much longer than that you run the risk of boring people or saying something you shouldn't. 2 minutes is the average attention span.
