That is a very interesting question. Singapore is a tiny country of 4.6 million people on a tiny island with no natural resources. Although Singapore's political system is parliamentary in name, it has been ruled by one man (Lee Kuan Yew) and one party (PAP) who restricted individual freedoms and stunted political development. However, it follows the rule of law and has all of the institutions of freedom and democracy.

India, on the other hand, has 1.1 billion people with land containing a fair amount of natural resource (coal, iron, aluminum, manganese, etc) and has a democratic republic political system.

The ethnic mix for Singapore is about ¾ Chinese, 15% Malay, and 10% Indian. The language most commonly used are Mandarin Chinese (35%) and English (23%). For India, it is ¾ Indo-Aryan and 25% Dravidian. Although Hindi is the national language, only 30% of the people speak it. There are 14 other major languages with English being the unifying language which commerce and politics are conducted with.

Both countries have excellent higher educational systems; however, India’s overall literacy is only 61% compared to 93% for Singapore. The per capita GPD is $3,800 for India with an unemployment rate of 7.8%. 60 percent of the population is in agriculture. Whereas Singapore enjoys a $31,400 per capita GDP with a 3% unemployment rate.

India wasted many years following a Soviet styles command economy. They have focused on market oriented economies only since 1990. So what can India do to catch up? First, India needs political stability. Second, India needs an Information Department as in Singapore. What does the Information Department of Singapore do? Propaganda. It buys add on Singaporean television to tell all Singaporeans that they are Singaporean first, even though they may be ethnic Chinese, Indian, or Malay. After one generation of this indoctrination, ethnicity becomes secondary. Same with religion and ethnic language. That which binds everyone together has to be stronger than that the divides them. There should never be riots that kill thousands per event. The caste system needs to be a thing of the past, both in law, in theory, in practice, and in mass psychology. Women need to be treated as equals to men. Get rid of the dowry system. Better still reverse it -- the man's family needs to pay the girl's family a dowry -- that was the way it was 200 hundred years ago. Third, India is already on its way -- market economy. Fourth, invest more on infrastructure -- water conservation, clean water, wastewater reclaimation, electricity, roads, clean renewable energy sources, etc. As the market economy broadens and empowers a middle class, jobs and better education needs to trickle down to the hinterlands.

How long would it take? About 50 years would be my guess if the right policies are followed.

You question is not on evevn footing.Singapore is a Port *** Island country, hardly a country of Gigantic size like India which has more than 1100 million population ; nearly 600,000 villages; more than 4,500 Districts(each ne has more population than S'pore); Costitutionally (8th Schedule) having 18 languages; nearly 30 odd States and Union Teritorries;more than 1200 dialects; inhabited by more than 6 large religious groups; having more than 26 ethnic groups........and, it's a country that can be compared to some extent with China (where diversity as I mentioned here is less than what is there in India).
Compare singapore with Gibraltor or Malta or Fiji.
India with so much diverse problems loaded with 2nd largest size of population in the world shouldn't be compared with S'pore.
Even the city of Mumbai is too big to compare with S'pore.
India is a giant country having the GDP .........in order of quantum , 4/5th in the world. With so much of population, illiteracy, disease and religious divisions , India as been doinjg very well in all fields. It's growth rate is also very good. That being the reason , there are many nations who are supprting India's inclusion in the Security Council at the UNO...........because, voice of India means one-fifth or one-sixth the voice of the world , not just because India has huge population , mainly because, India is strong Industrially and the large size of its Economy.Scientific advancement and research actvities in all fields .....simultaneous implementation of these are great.World is grateful to India to create newer variety of rice and other Food grains .....as a result of which , today many of the countries which have been maintaining close liaison with India are overcoming food shortage or famine.
India itself has become self sufficient in food and agro product. It's great achievement.India feeds others as well.

P.S. Will you compare a Railway Train with a Necklace?

As it is very commonly said, it requires the courage, knowledge and ability to say 'Yes'. It does not require any of these qualities to simply say 'NO', we can't.
So rather than pointing out on population, politicians, system and more.........
First of all we have to start saying Yes - we can. This is the first step.
It is in every individual who make up this country and decide the future for this country. We have some real good leader who have the vision. Let's support them and encourage more of those.
We have the brain but we're channeling to other countries. Stop the brain drain !!!
We have the resources to do anything and everything.
We have very capable leaders, bring them out. Stop the hooligans from getting into politics.
We need to do more (20x) than what we're doing today.

We can overtake singapore in less than 10 years.

I think still you are in Singapore, even though you are back in India. LOL. Firstly singapore is not a democratic country, second it is hardly 20 sq km, which you can find IT city's better than Singapore in India itself. Lastly all Indian cities need not ape Singapore, they can have their own culture.

You should rephrase the second line: India will be touring Bangladesh fourth time in ten years, while they were never invited to came to India for any test series. And Bangladesh are improving but slowly and there is very little chance that they would beat india in the upcoming series. one of the main reason is that bangladesh is not invited to play much test series abroad. look at the odi and 20/20 sides. as they have played quite a number of match they have shown tremendous improvement there.

india is ever improving on certain accounts but not all. if you are talking about the cleaniness and order that Singapore has then i am afraid, with the size of india, the multicultural background..it may never achieve that level....but sizewise singapore is just like a small urban city like delhi, mumbai, bangalore...at that level i think india can beat even singapore...

the political environment in india doesn't allow it to improve much but at a microlevel, at those small city levels it can be done..it is possible to acheive a douoble digit growth at microlevel than at a macro level like india..teh average growth rate will be always low because of skewed development..compare the states of bihar, mp, orissa with kerala, punjab, goa, pondicherry, delhi, mumbai(not maharashtra), hyderabad, chennai etc.. that unequal distribution average up to a lower level......
this differential between states is in a way good for india..it gives so much scope for improvement, diversion of efforts and energies..whereas singapore will soon achieve nirvana and saturation. it can't expand, while india has scope for both vertical and horizonal expansion...population for india tends to be both a big asset as well as a liability...

the biggest chunk of economy of singapore is supported by its tourism industry, while for india /china its services and labour...

so i think on certain accounts india cannot and should not look at overtaking singapore..while on many accounts it is already way ahead of singapore...size of economy, culture, trades, goods and services, industries... etc.

i dont want to put some technical issues here..... but while practical thinking ..... just go n see out side of ur home.... wats going in india.... still we r fighting for religion, caste and status.... u know... 2 decades back.... no politician used religion n caste as weapon for is victory..... but now... this 21st century.... these religion aspects burning the north india..... even though india is growing in IT sector in one side... see other side... wats happening.... u compared singapore with india....in singapore there is no religious fight n useless politicians.... so if india growing in 1 side.... on other side (corruption, politics) making india most worse..... so compare to improvment lagging is more ............
