Yes, whether you are religious or not, all life on this planet is interconnected & serves a purpose. While the individual can function alone, he is not complete without the "whole". If that makes sense.....

Your answer sorta suggests itself, for what is the sum of all living things but some form of greater classification anyway? Groups of anything can and will always be classified in some greater fashion.
A rose is part of the greater classification of plants, which is part of the greater classification of species, which are contained on Earth, which is part of the Milky Way Galaxy, etc etc etc.
Crust and filling and dough all are parts yet all parts are contained in the word 'pie'. Coincidence?

Hmmm. My body's cells are definitely part of the greater whole that is me, and right now maybe I am part of a greater whole called the internet (of whose intelligence and self awareness is very debatable) but I am not sure if all things are part of a greater whole.

Only in a few very limited senses:
We all have the same basic 'engine' of life - the biochemical cycles that drive all living things.
Some life - like plankton - modify the conditions on the planet and keep it suitable for the rest. The Gaia Hypothesis.

It seems that way. We all work in harmony, whether we completely understand it or not.
