They want that BS taught in science classes, not history. It actually *does* belong in history simply because that belief has shaped a lot of what has gone on in the world. I had to read it in English because of how much it has influenced the world of literature. But I agree with you on the argument against how history is taught. My classes always started with the dawn of time - the Indus Valley Civilization, the Egyptians, etruscans, Romans, Greeks, Minoans, etc. and by the end of the year we had no time for WW1, WW2, Viet nam, etc.

When I was a kid there was a school called Christa McAuliffe in my district, I'm pretty sure everyone was taught who she was. The whole Iran contra affair is more of a college level kind of thing so Oliver North isn't a big name in high school. But, as far as creationism it doesn't need to be taught in schools because it is complete bull.

My wife is a US History grad student and she has been appalled at the undergrads in senior-level modern US classes who weren't aware that Russia used to be the USSR and that we had a few issues with them. They didn't know about the Iran hostage situation, the Camp david Accords, the pershings in Germany, Gorbachev, the coup in Russia, the government shutdown, "no new taxes," the Republican Revolution. They don't get references to the Princess Bride or the Goonies and think inflation has pretty much always been between 2 and 3%.
Most of them can tell you about both evolution and creationism at a high level and would readily admit that doesn;t afect the way they live their lives or their faith.
And their voices and votes count just as much as yours, my dear.

Because the government has to pacify us somehow, so why not debate about meaningless social issues.
Ask anyone you know, I guarantee you they are voting on social issues. Social issues should have nothing to do with politics, its a political machine designed to get dollars by people who are scared of change. For example, the war on drugs, which most people are not even aware is still going on.
In fact, ask anyone under the age of thirty who put Suddam Hussein in power. They won't have any idea that it was the United States.
There is a reason that socialized governments scare people, and you are living it.

First of all, evolution isn't taught as fact. Evolution is a theory and until someone disproves it then it will be taught as it is now. But I agree with the other person who said everything should be taught. I consider myself to be open minded and the only way I can be that way is to learn as much as I can about things. People are not able to make a sound judgement or develop an educated opinion if they aren't taught all sides of an issue. Then, and only then can you honestly give your opinions because you've explored the subject thoroughly.
And again, evolution isn't taught as fact!

Unfortunately they don't teach a lot of the things kids really need to know to become productive members of society and especially lacking bias, but what're ya gonna do? So if they toss in the rest of it... it's just like keeping up with making the United States look wholeheartedly okay for driving the Native Americans off land that we didn't own and torturing the rest and other delicious divisive falsehoods that make us look like some kind of saints and other countries oogie.

Education is failing. For the fun of it, ask kids, high school age or above to read a dial type of clock..I am amazed at how many kids can't tell time without a digital watch. I think schools need to stress basics so kids can at least figure out their paychecks and grocery bills.

Why not teach all of these things? If we teach about the concept of creationism in schools, that doesn't mean we don't have time to teach about North or McAuliffe or Quadafy.
