Until recently, there were Laotian fighters holding their own again the communist regime. Clandestine support had come to them from the US government is small amounts for decades. Seems the "war on terror" has taken a priority and these Laotians have been cut off by the current administration. In a way, sadly, the war is still going on. The people of VietNam, Cambodia and Laos have suffered terribly for generations. Now the people of Iraq will experience the same. Rarely is their a winner in war, except death and destruction, which isn't winning anything.

Not quite. There was one Marine deserter who was found in Vietnam and turned over to a team from the Joint US Military Assistance Group Office from our embassy in Thailand in 1979. He was treated at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Okinawa, Japan and then transported to Camp Lejeune for a court-martial. He was found guilty and imprisoned, along with a Dishonorable Discharge from the Corps.
I was the Assistant Administrator of that Navy Medical Center at the time and am quite familiar with the case.

This is another Urban Myth along the lines of the Japanese soldiers that keep turning up on long forgotten pacific islands who still believe the WW2 is going on!!!As the Jungles of Asia cover a lot of ground does the reference to Vietnam hint he was:
A, American?
B, South Vietnamese?
C, North Vietnamese?
D, Chinese?
E, Laotian?
If A, he would have been featured on many news channels,
he would have wrote a book,
and it would have been made in to a blockbuster movie and now a mini series.

All of the stories I have ever heard that relate to this are of Japanses soldiers after WW2. I think culturally, in an imperial Japan, who fought so hard and well for the Emporer, they could have actually beleived that the war was still going on, or that the Japanese would eventually come bak for them. Either way, it is quite an amazing story.

I've heard stories about that too. Mainly they are hiding out, and in their mind, they are still doing a mission, and just got lost in time. Basically, they lost their mind.
There are probably still many others living over there now, thinking they lost the war, and who are listed as MIA.
