I treat my dogs with a monthly topical flea and tick preventative but they have still gotten a few ticks through out the summer. I am some what worried about lyme disease. What are some symptoms of lyme disease? How soon after a tick bite will these symptoms show up?

As an aside- I'm concerned that the topical flea/tick preventatives I use are not as affective as I had hoped. My dogs are avid swimmers and get wet almost daily... does prolonged water exposure affect these products? Is there a brand that is more water resistant than others? What brand do you find works best on your dogs?

All answers that your vet can answer for you! It is your responsibility as a pet owner to take your animals to the vet, sometimes there aren't any early signs of lymes disease, they should have their lymes shots, that way you wouldn't be on here all worried, please take them to the vet!

If you live in an area where ticks are a problem then you should have your dog vaccinated against lyme's disease. There are only 2 products that I know of that are effective against ticks and those are Frontline Plus and K9 Advantix. You have to read and make sure it protects from ticks too because lots of topical flea preventions do not prevent ticks. I found that the K9 Advantix works best for my dog ( he's a collie mix and finding ticks in his long fur is a pain). Both of these products are supposed to be waterproof.

I live in a highly deer populated area and Lyme disease is a huge concern. I have my dog immunized for Lyme disease. I also use frontine for feas and ticks, but the vet has informed me that Flea and tick meds aren't enough all alone. Get your dog immunized by the vet.
I'm not sure how long it takes for a dog to show signs of the disease, but lameness is a symptom.

Which product are you using? If it's from a pet store it's unlikely to be using.

Frontline is the leading flea and tick preventative. You actually need to use it every 2 weeks for it to be effective against ticks. It should be waterproof 48 hours after application i.e wait 48 hours after application before letting your dog swim! You also need to wait 48 hours after letting the dog get wet before you can apply it.

If your dog ever seems ill to you, seek veterinary advice. It's depends what area/country you're from as to how at risk you are from Lyme's disease.

If you want to, you can get them tested. As in humans, lyme disease might go without symptoms until arthritis and other problems show up.

There is a lyme vaccine that works for dogs. If you live in an area where they are high risk it might be something to look into.
