I have a female dachshund who is in heat and am wondering how long a dog stays in heat. She has been in heat two other times and got pregnant both times but do not remember how long she was in heat. Also would like to know if a dog can get pregnant if they are not in heat? A neighbors dog jumped on her and we thought that this dog had got her pregnant but it was my male dog who did the job. She was pregnant and we did not even know it. She was not in heat when the neighbors dog jumped on her. We are wanting to take my dog and have her spayed.

Nancy,

The best thing to do is to go ahead with your own thoughts of getting her spayed. The male dogs have a high since of smell and they are on the prowl for your nice little doggie. With that said they will want to jump her bones at any time while she is in heat. I would not take a chance and let her alone during this time and yes the other one is correct when he say's about 3 weeks of this. The other question you asked about her being able to get pregnant while she is not in heat NO. This is the one and only time she is able to get pregnant.

I hope this helps you

Thanks,

Getting her spayed is a great idea! She's in heat for a total of about 3 weeks and needs to be 100% supervised whenever she's outside for the whole time - even though she's not in standing heat for the whole cycle. And no, dogs cannot get pregnant when they're not in heat.

Dogs are generally in heat from 10-14 days however, they can vary a little either direction. A dog can not get pregnant if they are not in heat. There are dogs that will have what is known as a "silent heat," where they are not showing the typical heat signs, but they are still considered to be in heat.

I agree that getting her spayed is a great idea. Getting your male dog neutered is also a great idea, and you don't have to wait the three weeks for your dog to be out of heat to get him done. Call your vet today and schedule an appointment.

In season for about three weeks,no they cant get pregnant unless there in season.

Im not going to get on my soap box about getting her spayed but if shes already been pregnant twice i think you might want to start thinking about pretty soon.

She will be on heat for around 10-11 days, she can not get pregnant unless she is on heat x

Get her spayed ASAP. You obviously are not willing to keep her away from male dogs while she is in heat, so I'd get her spayed.
