Hi. First of all we need a budget. Also the shape and size of the room it will be installed in. Are you more of a music listener or movie watcher ? Do you want all the components from the same manufacturer ,commonly known as a Home Theater In a Box. (HTIB ) ? Or do you prefer to buy the parts separately ,which can be updated when required.Although separates are more expensive, it is the preferred method of buying.a good home theater system.

So ,basically you will need the following minimum components.

[1] A 5.1 , 6.1 or 7.1 Receiver
[2] one or more Source components (DVD Player,VCR, Satellite etc.)
[3] 5 , 6, or 7 Loudspeakers and a Subwoofer
[4] Cables to connect everything together.

Speaker recommendation is hard to give because everyone likes the sound of different loudspeakers,so you have to listen to get the ones that you can live with.Basically there are 4 types of speaker sound. Speakers with an emphasis on the high frequencies .Speakers with a prominent peak in the mid-range frequencies.(which project voice and singing) Speakers that have more bass in relation to the other frequencies and lastly Speakers that have a flat frequency range from the lowest to the highest notes ,meaning they are ''neutral".or have low colouration.Of course there are speakers that have a mixture of the other 4 speaker sounds, but these are hard to discribe. The "neutral"sounding speakers are preferred by most Audiophiles in a High Fidelity sound system.

Receivers also influence the sound you hear because although they do the same job (amplifying the tiny signal from the source components) they all degrade the signal sent to them in varying degrees. The greatest comprimise in a Receiver is the use of a single power supply for the preamp section ,the tuner section and the power amplifiers section. The needs of the power amps affect the preamp which is the heart of the system. This can degrade the quality of sound reproduction.

If you could supply those details we will put something good together which you should enjoy.

Depending upon your budget, I really like my Bose Acoustimass. You can get them for about $1,000. If you do not want to spend that much, I have a decent sony system in the bedroom that I spent about $500 on.

Go to the store and listen. That is the best way to decide what is right for you.
