Very seldom do I feed our dogs table scraps. Our food these days has a lot of salt in it, which can be bad for animals.
Yet, before we had all the fancy dog foods, dogs DID eat 'human' food. Therefore, I will give my dogs foods that are low in sodium, but..ONLY outside. NEVER do my dogs get fed any 'human' food indoors.
I've never had anything taken from a plate or counter OR out of the hands of my grandkids.

My indoor cat is another case all together. *winks*

Make certain that you are not giving your pitbull rawhide. There are all natural products such as bully sticks, that are available to you for him. Rawhide can get "stuck" in his intestines and cause massive troubles. The natural products are like "super" jerkied things. Tough, chewable and safe for consumption for him.

Try giving both dogs a treat at the same time. This will stop your Lhasa from trying to steal the pitbulls food and vice versa.

Poultry bones are the WORST thing to give to animals. They are brittle and break much easier than beef bones. The small splinters can be lodged in the mouth, throat, tummy and intestines of your dogs, piercing all kinds of things and possibly tearing the stomach or intestines...causing massive infection and possibly death. Please, if you are going to feed them any kind of poultry, remove it from the bones first.

Your dogs need some training to stop stealing food. Talk with a trainer on here via e-mail or go to your local PetSmart, PetCo or Animal Shelter. They all know of trainers in the area.

Good luck!

You might need to separate the dogs while eating, your pit bull is showing very strong signs of "resource guarding" and I think you will need to up the Obedience Training.

You need to be in the Alpha role and show strong leadership, then the next most dominant dog should be next in the pack order, then the least dominant in the lowest position.

So the top dog gets treats first, pats first and so on, in this case it sounds like the Pit Bull would be top dog of the two. The other dog should fall into line, since establishing pack order reduces the overall stress in a group of dogs.

Take all toys away and do not leave bones lying around. Give your dogs a nice meaty bone about once or twice a week, but keep them separated from each other while they eat it and take any uneaten bits away. I say this because there has been a precedent of one dog attacking another.

If you want to give them some table scraps make it only about 10% of their total food and add it to their evening meal. Rich, salty and spicy foods are unsuitable as are any cooked bones. Things like pumpkin and some greens are ok or any meat you can pick off a bone for them.

Please contact a training school or obedience class about your dogs behaviour.

Also neuter and spay your dogs, this might help calm things down, do you have two un-neutered males together there?

Most vets will tell you no table scraps because they assume you are not feeding a balance diet but only the junk left over. Table scraps are OK if they are good scraps, meats, veggies and no bones, or processed foods.

Pigs ears are very dangerous to give to dogs, The edges are sharp and can cause cutting in the stomach and intestines. Deaths and extensive surgeries are resulted from pig ears.

Sounds like your guys do not respect you as the pack leader. You need to get control of the counter jumping dog.

lots of luck

there are many do,s and don,ts about this subject. I gave my pit table scraps and he lived to be 17 yrs. old. There are too many things that recently I have found out that are actually deadly to a dog. We have a boxer who is absolutely adorable. She was drinking a lot of water until she kept throwing it back up. We knew something wasn,t right and luckily we had a vet for a friend who found out she has a kidney disease. She is now operating on only 25% of her kidneys which is the most she can lose and has to be on a controlled diet now. I found out that their stomachs are strong but things like grapes or raisins will totally destroy their kidneys. So I wouldn,t take any chance on table scraps. Especially if you want the dog around for a while. Besides, pits don,t even savor what they eat. They inhale it and wait for more. And like you said, now the dog feels that the kitchen is now her turf? Nip that in the bud or it will get harder for you. I know you feel bad but in reality, the dog could feel a lot worse that you.

Feeding your dog table scraps is a horrible idea. If you consistantly feed them table scraps the dog will begin to beg more often while you are trying to have dinner, if anything is left out on a table or counter they will begin to steal it. The best thing to do is to keep this off the counter when you are not around and to put the dogs in a seperate room while you are eating or tether them up while you are eating then begin to train your dogs by having a place for them to lay down while you are eating the best way to do this is tether them to a spot in another room away from you while you are eating... give them a down stay if they get up simply put them back in a down stay they will eventually get the point and you wont have to tether them up.

Hope this works.

Yes I give our rottie daisy a little bit here and there, but it's more of a treat and I would never give her fatty things like baking grease or bacon ect...Any dog will get protective over it's treat or chew toy if another dog is nearby...no matter if they are buddies or not, so maybe don't give your one dog a pig ear to chew when they are together, and your going to have to discipline him to keep off the counter or keep food put away off the counter.

Yes! My lab is the best dishwasher I've got! She gets everything perfectly clean, like I can just put the plates back in the cabinet!
My dogs clean up all our leftovers, and they love it. They're not fat, they're not unhealthy. What do you think dogs ate before Purina and Canidae came along?

I did but then they got fat so I don't now it is also not recommended by any vet. For one reason our food has too much salt in it. Just ignore them while you are eating and you might want to hide the turkey they also are not supposed to eat chicken bones proably turkey too the bones break too easy and get lodged in them

My mom does, and her dog is TOO overweight. I decided that we wouldn't be feeding our puppy table scraps when she gets older.
