God no.
Why would they need to 'buy' a groom for you? Doesn't he love you for you.

Dowrys were origionally put brought around the middle ages. Most of the time it was to bring more wealth to the grooms side of the family in exchange of support in any capacity to the brides side of the family. Unfornately this also caused many couples to be forced into marraige not of their own choosing. Because a woman had a substantial dowry including money and land, there were many men who even tried to get the woman into a inappropriate position. The woman was then forced to marry the man who comprimised her by her family. Fortunately, todays society do not force anybody to marry who they do not want to. The only thing that comes even close is a pre-nup.

Where are you asking from? Dowry's have never been important in this country. Yes, there were rich people who I am sure did give a dowry but this has always been a country of poor to middle class people. Most of the folks in this country were trying to make a living and not about to give it away so someone would marry their daughter. If you are talking about today I can hear most people laughing from here.

In my opinion: No.
No matter in which country you live. It's now even legally abolished in countries, that traditionally do had a dowry (like India for example).
And I would not negotiate with your groom's family, as it is not a tradition anymore - legally and socially.
He should love you without any financial links.

depends on where you live. It's definitely not done in any Western country. Some families still expect dowries in India, although the practice is now illegal there. don't know about other asian or african countries...

Not in this day and age in this country (U.S.) for those who are born here or for those who adopt the customs of our country.
In some countries it may still apply. I believe that is true for India, Cambodia, many areas/territories in Africa and Thailand among many others I'm sure.
Immigrants who maintain the customs from their country and/or religious beliefs most likely continue the dowry tradition regardless of the "norm" for their new homeland.

It depends upon where you come from. I believe this is still done in some countries, but those places are decreasing as they become "westernized".

If you're living in the middle ages, sure. Although in that case, I'm curious to know how you got internet access...
