I'm going for the first time this year. It says online that you can take pics with your dog and santa, but I don't think I will. I would hate to ruin the pic with a blink or someting :) As others have said, I would'nt dress up the dog. I'm taking my 2 year old mixed just as he is. It's much cuter that way and the costume won't distract.

Have you ever taken a small child to see Santa? Theyre petrified. A guy who dresses up in bright colors and hides his face behind a huge beard and glasses does not inspire trust, it makes him very scary.
Imagine being a dog and not even understanding whats being said about the person.
Why not donate a few bucks to them for the charity? Then if you do want the Santa picture you can do it at home, in a more controlled environment where the dog is more comfortable. That will also allow you to slowly introduce certain parts of the costume onto a person the dog knows.

My husband and I got our dogs pic taken with PetSmart Santa about 2 years ago. You pay $5 or $10 dollars and they take 2 Polaroids for your dog with Santa. The money goes to a pet charity and you get to keep the two pics and a picture frame.

I've had several pix with Santa over the years - pet goose, pet chicken, pet tarantula, pet goat (we had babies in December - boy were they a hit) and of course the dogs.
Depending on the charity sponsoring the photo shoot, you can get Polaroids - but sometimes you can get enlargements. I guess at this point, the charity could use digital cameras etc. as well.
I never dress my pets - they really don't enjoy it.

i haven't had my pups picture taken yet. (it's his first Christmas too) i was thinking an elf-ish collar would be cute:
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2811594&cp=2767032.2886725&pg=2&fbx=0&fbn=Taxonomy%7CApparel+%26+Collars&f=Taxonomy%2FPET%2F2886725&fbc=1&parentPage=family&keepsr=1
or a reindeer outfit would be cute too:
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2873932&cp=2767032.2886725&pg=3&fbx=0&fbn=Taxonomy%7CApparel+%26+Collars&f=Taxonomy%2FPET%2F2886725&fbc=1&parentPage=family&keepsr=1
just don't go too over the top or the pup won't appreciate it. ;)
i'm sure you can get as many as you want if you are willing to pay for them.(but it depends on who is working, and how long the line is) the money goes to shelters tho. :D
EDIT:
as an answer to Showtunes, most dogs aren't afraid of Santa. like most dogs aren't afraid of petsmart. i work at petmart and some dogs can't even walk into the building without shaking. (these are the kinds of dog who only leave the house to go to the vets or the groomers.) on the other hand some dogs (like mine) spend so much time out of the house around strange people, nothing scares them. my dog spends so much time at petsmart he'll just be thinking, "wow, Dennis is wearing a lot of red today. what's that white fluffy thing on his face? maybe i can eat it." moral of the story? know your dog, and don't dis Santa in front of me. :P

It's better when the animal looks natural, and the one in the costume is Santa. From my experience, they're good with dogs and take good pictures.
I beleive you can only take 2 pics maybe 3 at the most if you insist, but they'll only print one.

Um no - I haven't.
Last year when I was there buying dog food they were doing the Santa Pix...Some lady had her dog dressed up like Santa - It looked absolutely mortified (Beard and all) and not to mention, ridiculous.
At the very most, put a Santa Hat on the dog...

I had my pups picture taken at Petsmart last year and will again this year. They take two 5 x 7 pictures and you have the choice of one. Petco has a similar deal.

I did last year because my boyfriend was deployed and I thought it would be a cute idea. You can put a costume on if you like and normally they take one to two pictures depending on if it's a poloroid or a digital camera.
