Those are sprayed on with a special sprayer. However they're fast going out of favor because they're so hard to repaint/maintain. A much nicer looking treatment is to trowel on the same type of "mud" used for hiding seams in sheetrock, then stipple it with a stiff brush to create random patterns. After drying, the ceiling can then easily be painted with a roller or brush.

You dont roll on that kind of texture. If you roll it on it will smash it down, It has to be sprayed on. You can go to home depot or lowes and they have popcorn texture in spray cans and you just spray it on and its done. OR you can get a sprayer, which is of course more expensive, but if your doing a large area then you may want to invest in that.

Popcorn is totally out and you'll be killing your resale value. People have loved homes and turned them away because of popcorn ceilings. They either have to remove it (real pain), or you will at some point.

my advice is dont do it. Your resale value will be better with a flat ceiling.

YOU COULD ROLL IT, JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE ENOUGH ADHESIVE IN YOUR MIX.
