For the past few weeks, my 19 month old has been waking up every hour or two (and not every night, but about 5 days a week). She whines or gives a few wails, moves around, and goes back to sleep. Sometimes she wakes up completely. She was always a great sleeper...I cannot figure out what went wrong. Can it be possible she is having alot of nightmares? Tonight I am going to feed her alot before she goes to bed...maybe it is hunger. Does anyone else's toddler do this?

ours is doing the same thing. we started giving her some infant tyleno, or infant motrin before bedtime and it seems to help, so we've deduced it to teething. I'm sure she's having a few bad dreams, i wouldn't call them nightmares just yet. when they wake up in sweats, screaming bloody murder, then I'd call them "nightmares". Just don't get into the habit of going in there and picking her up every single time she whimpers, or she'll expect it everytime, no matter what. Think of it this way.......if you kne that every time you made a noise, someone was going to pick you up, hug you tight, rock you gently back to sleep, wouldn't you see to it that it happened alot? We make sure that she gets a full 8 or 9 ounces of warm milk before bedtime, brush her teeth, then off to bed with a warm full tummy. bear with her, she'll grow out of it.

Actually, that is probably her natural sleep cycle and she is just having a harder time sleeping through the light spells when she comes out of REM sleep. It could be teeth. It could be separation anxiety. It could just be that she is moving to make herself more comfortable. You do this too, we just don't know it because we are asleep enough to not wake all the way. It does not sound like your daughter is all the way awake either. I would think that if she is no longer a night eater, that she is not hungry. It just sounds like something she will have to pass through. I would keep doing what you are doing, letting her soothe herself back down...so she knows that she can put herself back to sleep when she wakes up. It will stop soon enough!

My toddler does this every once in a while. She might be having nigh terrors, but most likely, it is something else. Make sure she isn't too cold or hot. My son started going through some seperation anxiety at bedtime, so my husband gave him one of his shirts and told him to take good care of it and in the morning, he would get it from him. This helped a lot to make him more secure. Good luck!

Is it possible that gas pains could cause this?

Does she have to pee? Does she have a pillow? Is she cold?
